| I'm considering buying a 256 GB SDD to replace the 500 GB hard drive on this laptop that was recently purchased. Any thoughts the current SSD technology? |

I have an old Dell D630 at work. I asked my boss for a new computer and he said no. I asked for a new hard drive and he said sure so I bought a 120GB ssd. It's like having an extremely fast modern computer now. It boots up in seconds and has no problems running large CAD files and multiples programs. I love it.
eta A year later my boss bought me a high end i7 8gb ram laptop with a conventional hd. It seems slower than the old outdated dell with the sshd. |

SSDs have come down to what I would consider a reasonable price. I just picked up a Samsung 830 256GB for $160 from Newegg. If it is your only drive in the computer, then it is also suggested to have as much RAM as possible and reduce/eliminate the pagefile.
I plan on being more diligent with frequent backups, too. |

Samsung 830/840 is a very good choice.
If your laptop has an mSATA slot and supports Intel Smart Response, you can use an SSD up to 64GB as a massive cache for your HDD. Using a Mushkin 60GB SSD to accelerate a 2TB RAID-1 array on my desktop... runs like a raped ape. Boots Windows 7 in ~15 seconds. |

I went with the Crucial M4, it is on par with the Samsung 830 from my understanding.
Also have a Corsair V64 and OCZ Vertex, both are MUCH slower (yet still MUCH faster than a HDD). Same goes for a Kingston HyperX and Corsair Force GT I have played with. The OCZ is on its way in for a fourth RMA now... probably use it as a paperweight if it doesn't sell on eBay. |

I have two Crucial M4's, one of the 128 GB versions, and a 256 GB version. Other than a firmware bug that I had to flash the firmware for 6 months ago, it's been rock solid. |

Couldn't resist any more
Kingston Hyper X 120GB SSD $69.99 at Tiger Direct. Should have it by Halloween. Going to put it in my main desktop and clone the OS partition (50GB) over to it. I'll be putting my most frequently played games on it, as well. I've been looking for a while and this deal was just too good to pass on. They've have SSDs for the same price before, but not without a rebate. (At least not that I've seen or not for a drive that reviews as well as this one does.) |
| If you are looking for SSD's, be sure to watch Slickdeals. That link there is to a 128GB Samsung 830 for $76 shipped right now, that extra $6 is WELL worth it over a Kingston HyperX. |
