I'll keep it short and simple. Went to a 4 year college and earned a degree from University of Mississippi in Homeland Security. Once I moved here I got on the local volunteer department. While in school I worked nights as an E-911 operator for 3.5 years. I've paid my way through Rope Tech, Hazmat Tech, Confined Space Tech, and NREMT-B. My family lives in Little Rock AR and my wife and I would like to join them. I'm currently going through North Little Rock Fire's hiring process. me and roughly 80 people took the written test. Out of that 80 only 19 were invited back for the physical test. 17 out of 19 passed it. So as it stands I will compete against 17 people for 3-5 positions. I have an interview scheduled next week with the Civil Cervice Commission. Now questions:

1. How long will the interview last?
2. How much fire related questions would you think they will ask?
2. Will they see my classes and throw out technical questions on that subject matter?
3. How should my answers sound? Should they reflect my experience in the fire service or should I stick with layman's terms?
4. If I don't meet their eye requirement do you think I could sign a waiver and get surgury done 6 months after hire?

Thanks and any other advice would be welcome.

Number 4 will come back to haunt you.  If you don't meet their eye standards you may be out of luck.  The whole purpose of a civil service system (theoretically) is everything by the book, the candidate that best meets the standards wins.  I'm sensing your eyes don't meet their standard.

You sir are correct. The vision requirements are 20/40 in one eye 20/20 in the other uncorrected My plan is that when and if it comes up I will explain that I see it as a personal buisness expense and without a motivation I'm not going to shell out 7 grand for a department that may or may not hire me. If I'm a canidate that they would like to hire I would be more than happy to sign paperwork that added lasik as a condition of employment.

Seriously tho...they might hire someone who doesnt have a vision issue just because they can and it is easier for them. Plain and simple.

One question they may ask is What you would do if you saw another firefighter mopping up a scene put some diamonds into his pocket. He says it is for safe keeping and he will give it to supervisor as soon as he is done. You know he did not do as he said at the end of shift. What do you do?

I dont think they will ask you detailed stuff about fire behavior etc.
