I was just listening to some of my music collection, and, it struck me that I have some really GD obscure tastes....Some more popular, but, not the songs the artist is noted for....Kinda nutty, I suppose.  I thought, off the top of my head...(Since I'm drinking) I'd name off some songs that just get at my soul.  I swear, as maddening as it is, I cannot listen to these songs without having somthing in my eye.

Let's hear some songs that dig at you, ARFCOM hive.

Corpus Christie Bay-Robert Earl Keen
Texas On My Mind-Pat Green
Some Gave All-Billy Ray Cyrus
Proud To Be an American-Lee Greenwood
Revolution/Liberty-Chris De Burgh

I've got an oldie--"You Better Sit Down Kids" by Gary Puckett and The Union Gap. Anyone familiar with it? I heard it as a youngster when my parents were getting divorced and it still gets to me when I hear it today.

Better sit down kids
I'll tell you why, kids
You might not understand, kids
But give it a try, kids
Now how should I put this
I've got something to say
You mother is staying
But I'm going away
No, we're not mad, kids
It's hard to say why
Your mother and I
Don't see eye to eye
Say your prayers before you go to bed
Make sure you get yourself to school on
time
I know you'll do the things your mother
asks
She's gonna need you most to stay in
line
Keep in mind your mother's gonna need
Your help a whole lot more than she
ever did before
No more fights over little things
because
I won't be here to stop them anymore
I know you don't want this, neither do
we
But sometimes things happen
That we can't foresee
Now try to be calm, kids
And don't look so sad
Just cause I am leaving
I'll still be your dad
Just remember I love you
And though I'm not here
Just call if you need me
And I'll always be near
(Repeat Chorus)
Well, I have to go now
So kiss me goodbye
My eyes are just red, kids
I'm too big to cry

Bagpipes, particularly The Marines Hymn
"When The Tigers Broke Free" by Pink Floyd

When The Tigers Broke Free

It was just before dawn
One miserable morning in black 'forty four.
When the forward commander
Was told to sit tight
When he asked that his men be withdrawn.
And the Generals gave thanks
As the other ranks held back
The enemy tanks for a while.
And the Anzio bridgehead
Was held for the price
Of a few hundred ordinary lives.

And kind old King George
Sent Mother a note
When he heard that father was gone.
It was, I recall,
In the form of a scroll,
With gold leaf and all.
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away.
And my eyes still grow damp to remember
His Majesty signed
With his own rubber stamp.

It was dark all around.
There was frost in the ground
When the tigers broke free.
And no one survived
From the Royal Fusiliers Company C.
They were all left behind,
Most of them dead,
The rest of them dying.
And that's how the High Command
Took my daddy from me.

Seriously though,

"The Minstrel boy"

Its an old Irish tune that can be found on the 'Blackhawk Down' movie soundtrack.

My 8 year old son dearly wants to be a Ranger when he grows up and the song always makes me think of him when I hear it.

Chris

p.s. The reason he wants to be a Ranger is because he wants to get back at those "bad guys" that killed so many of our Rangers in somalia.

Ich hatt' einen Kameraden I Had a Comrade
von Ludwig Uhland Translation by Frank Petersohn

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ich hatt' einen Kameraden,
Einen bessern findst du nit.
Die Trommel schlug zum Streite,
Er ging an meiner Seite
In gleichem Schritt und Tritt.

Eine Kugel kam geflogen:
Gilt's mir oder gilt es dir?
Ihn hat es weggerissen,
Er liegt vor meinen Füßen
Als wär's ein Stück von mir

Will mir die Hand noch reichen,
Derweil ich eben lad'.
"Kann dir die Hand nicht geben,
Bleib du im ew'gen Leben
Mein guter Kamerad!"

String Quartet in C-Sharp Minor (Opus 131) By Beethoven

If you dont know why I said that, it is the music the three germans were playing at the beginning of the "Why We Fight" episode of Band of Brothers (the one where they find the concentration camp).  Very sad episode, and very sad music to go along with it.

First, the song changes perspective in the middle of it; it is about an experience the singer had.
In college he knocked up his girlfriend, the little punk that never rarely ever took advice.  The child would have put a crim in their plans (when we tried not to slip) so they got her an abortion.  This turned into a further tragedy (We fell through the ice) as the guilt destroyed both of them and their relationship.
He is the same person as his friend.  The story was added to from the history; the suicide (attempt?) of the girl was not part of his experience, but it nearly happened.

The "Stopped a baby's breath and a shoeful of rice" refers to the child, and the wedding that didn't take place.

The sadness of not thinking through their actions, and the horror it brought to them is the theme.
