I have been having problems with the sound on my computer. If I am listening to music with nothing else running it is fine, but any other time it sounds horrible. I get a lot of distortion, kind of a crackle and chirp digital distortion, the speakers themselves are fine. The sound on startup is almost unrecognizable, while watching videos/movies the sound will be fine during talking or when not much is going on but once the action picks up or the background music picks up or heavy effects the distortion kicks in. Any idea on how to fix it or what might be the problem? I can usually figure things out myself with google's help but I have been able to come up with nothing.

Check and see if there's a sound driver update for your audio controller.  If not, or if you're up to date, it could be a hardware problem.  Could be something shorting in the connector.

IT has been like this for a month or two, not a big deal at first but it is starting to bother me and I would like to fix it, mostly because of the videos/movies it can get annoying.

I would try adding a sound card to see if the problem reappears.

sound card runs $20 at wal mart or computer supplier. wal mart glady accepts returns with a receipt.

oh yeah...

How exactly do you know the speakers are fine?  Did you try a different set of speakers?

I been a musician for over 10 years and have a fairly good knowledge base on speakers and the like. The speakers are fine the distortion is not the kind that would be caused by speakers in any way that I know of. The sound is fine when it the computer is not trying to do anything but play music, and even then I will get a couple "chirps" now and then. While watching movies the sound will be ok unless there is alot going on with the sound, ie lots of music or effects, explosions are very bad sounding for example or say the opening credits to a movie or something like that.

Have you gone in to the sound controls (spkr icon in sys tray), reduced volume of the sources that are distorting, and perhaps the master volume?
