Hi all, Need some help in locating a source for a good high quality mace repelent thing. My sister in law who lives in NYC wants something to carry around for some sort of self defense. She is pregnant at the moment. Handguns, crowbars, karate classes and other ideas have all been shot down by her and her husband. She is willing to carry around the Mace so I figured I could at least supply her with the best quality stuff around. I will happilly purchase something that comes with a strong recommendation from anyone here at AR15.com. Thanks Guys, Nick |

my personal choice for such situations is the hot pepper spray designed for bear defense. www.udap.com it's more concentrated than most of the consumer sprays and has some well thought out packaging and delivery systems. the large size with the 30ft range might even be adequate for home defense in nongun areas. edited to add that asault web has a thread with some good info: http://assaultweb.net/ubb/Forum1/HTML/229572.html |

www.galls.com and www.actiongear.com (Brigade Quartermasters) both carry OC aerosols. If you’re near the Fair Lakes VA Galyans www.galyans.com, they carry the Mace brand OC aerosols. Even though it’s a bit expensive and only has a three second spray, I prefer the ASP Key Defender and, in fact, carry one on a daily basis. Below is the ASP from a paper Brigade Quartermaster catalog. I think it is also available in a couple of colors not listed. I’d recommend a lighter color since the body is made of aluminum and once the finish starts to wear off, it looks pretty ratty if it’s got a dark finish. [image]www.ar15.com/members/albums/199%2FASP%2520Key%2520Defender%252001%2520jpg%2Ejpg[/image] You can probably also get the ASP Key Defender at Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly VA (though I admit I’m no great fan of that place). The really nice thing about the ASP is that if a woman also uses it for her keys, it won’t get misplaced somewhere in her purse (or even forgotten), as Waverunner mentions. A lot of folks view carrying OC the same way they view carrying a firearm - if they’ve got it with them, it will automatically protect them even if they don’t know how to use it. Untrue in both cases! Definitely try to also get an inert unit of the whatever spray you get, so she can practice with it and so she can see what the spray or stream pattern looks like and how far it goes. The inert will probably have a white spray while the real stuff will probably have an orange spray. Remind her that if she sprays the thing upwind, the wind will put the spray in her own face. (For essentially the same reason, many LEO’s have learned not to try to spray a suspect while pursuing them!) Also, if a .357 Magnum in the chest won’t always stop a bad guy, a bit of OC in the face is certainly not going to. She also needs to learn how to side step, eye-gouge, and just get the hell out of Dodge as quickly as she can. The OC is just to make it a little easier for her do that! Note that if left in a hot car, OC aerosols can explode and make a real mess! |
