What does it mean (in a cop slang manner) when you "stroke" someone?

I'm thinking it means the same as up here when you "ding" someone, meaning give them a ticket or charge them with something.

LOL I've usually used that phrase to mean somebody just got hit! "That dude I arrested wanted to fight so I stroked him one, then he bled all over the back seat!"

You can add "hangin' paper" to the list

Also "yeah i cut that guy some ducks" (i have no idea where this one originated from either)

Not to hijack this thread too badly but I have always chuckled at the phrase, "Tuning a prisoner up so that they run right." or "I had to take one to the shop and tune him up because he wasn't running right."

[#8]
For me, if it is something bigger I usually say: "I bombed him for careless" or something like that.

For simple traffic or whatever I say: "I tagged him for speeding".

I hear "stroke" and think of Billy Squier. Not anything I would do to someone on a traffic stop.

Where I work, if you stroke someone, you hit them.

Up here to stroke someone is to give them enough bullshit to think you care and are really concerned about their meaningless problem.

+1 here.

Also, tickets/citations="coupons"

When I "stroke" someone I had to "have a come to Jesus meeting" with them and "lay the healing hands" on them.

Same as JLowe or "Stroke" = "Spank"

One of the deputies here says he just gives receipts.

You behave badly in front of him and he gives you a receipt for your poor behavior.  I found that quite an interesting concept, and honestly quite correct.

Here, stroke is write a ticket (as opposed to arrest/warrant), i.e. a quick stroke of the pen.

Thumping, however, is something entirely different.

Around here it's "pinch" we even refer to our ticket books as "pinch" books.
