Not sure if everyone has seen/heard about this.  It comes up in our training every year because it's becoming more and more of an issue here and around the country.  From what I understand the original "issue" with Sovereign Citizens when they first came to be was tax evasion.... they transformed years ago and become more and more violent for their cause.

They seem to respect the Sheriff because he is elected..... Federal and Municipal law enforcement appear to be their targets.

Stay safe guys..... as the video above mentions, there is no such thing as a routine traffic stop.

I work for a Sheriff's Office....I have never personally ran into one of these guys, but guys from work have.  They said the few contacts they had were fairly pleseant....My guess is because we are Deputies, employed by an elected official, cuz I have talked to some of police officers in the surrounding municipalities and they have not had such good luck interacting with them.  Bottom line tho, Sheriff or Police, these guys are extremist nut jobs and as such are un-prodictable and therefor extremely dangerous!

You are right about reporting to a Sheriff, as it makes a big difference. Every one I ran into was a lil' different, but still respectful.

Yeah, we watched the videos when they first came out and it still makes me angry to watch them. Our sheriff just sent out another alert on these guys. Several of us have had contact with them, none live here, just passing through to other locales thank God.

The few times I've met them they've been alright, sometimes tense, but they seem to relax when they realize we're deputies. Had one give me a laser printed ID he'd made, that didn't go so well.

We have had different versions of  them in my area for years.

I've dealt with a few of them over the years.  They are all nuts and I think that most of them have some genuine mental issues.

Bunch of whackers.  They'd be laughable if they didn't produce a Terry Nichols once in a while.

Odd, you must have some new age posse commitatus/sovreign tards.  Old school the ONLY recognized LEO was THE sheriff as he was elected.  His deputies did not count anymore than the feds or municipal guys.

While a few will pose a serious threat (I believe the two brothers in the suburban shoot out back in the late 90's early oughts in Ohio IIRC were pc/sc wankers.  I also suspect that is where James Rawles got the idea for the two brothers in his latest version of "patriots".) most are more of the nuisance level and easily dealt with, if you enact the correct policies/procedures and get your courts on board with it( I can not stress this part enough.  Be patient it usually takes the courts a while to get on board).  For example, when I worked at an agency with a decent vocal group at first they were a monumental pain.  Once we developed methods for dealing with them and got the courts on board the bullshit slowed down and they became a minor nuisance.  On the other hand, the longer it festers in an area the more dangerous it becomes.

Some examples:
Judge got tired of issuing FTA's on traffic tickets (most common?  Driving with out a valid license, NPOI and fictituous use of plates.  Followed by DUR.  So court order no more summons and complaint for anyone who signed the ticket with a delta or semi colon(they claim that means they are signing under duress and aren't legally bound––––they will also try this crap at local banks on loans/mortgages).   After a couple arrests most either stop the obvious stupid and sign the ticket.  But still don't go to court, once or twice.  Then they either move, or figure out it is a losing game.  The more deluded will file a few bullshit lawsuits and/or liens untill they get shut down.  Then they generally move or register their vehicle get a license and sit at home talking about how they just did it to draw less attention, fight the system from with in etc.

Get to jail, if they refuse to cooperate, explain they don't see the judge for advisement, don't get a phone call, won't go to a pod and can't post bond until they are booked in.  If they are not booked in now, they will be asked at the start of each shift.  If they refuse they will not be given another oppurtunity for booking until the next shift comes in.  Generally the first time they hold out for 2-5 days (the record was three weeks which was the incident that got the procedures not only ironed out by supported by the judge.) before deciding answering the booking questions asked by a deputy beats sitting in a holding cell with a bible all day.  After the first time they usually would hold out for one shift to one day as a token protest.

Also, they are often like your better trained old school felons.  Alone, evenly matched or outnumbered they go along to get along and will try to avoid problems and will be incredibly polite.  In a group they have to save face so it becomes riskier and/or more of a pain in the ass as they feed off of each other.

Other tips and trivia.

Two of their favorite tactics used to be liens and lawsuits.  Liens became harder to get done.  The lawsuits generally don't go very far (one filed in federal district court for 8 figures was the shortest civil court case I ever saw.  Dismissed by the judge in well under an hour.  The complaintant got pissy, pointed out the gold fringe on the flag (another tactic thing they don't do as much since it generally annoys the judge and hurts your case.  First time I heard that was mid 80's at college.  I told the kid he was a dumbass.  A few years later I was a cop dealing with him and his buddies) as the start of a rant after the dismissal and was given the choice to shut up and leave or spend 6 months in custody of the feds for contempt.  He shut up and left.).

They also did this with bank employees when they defaulted/foreclosed etc on loans a lot in the 80's and 90's.  That slowed down when they started going after judges who upheld the foreclosures.  Funny thing, fuck with joe bank employee or joe cop and the courts don't notice.  Fuck with a judge and watch the fuck out.  If they start talking about that tell them good luck my house is owned by a trust and they generally drop it then and there.

Pocket constitutions are not only valuable history, good teaching tools etc.  They are also great for brain freezing the PC crowd.  It is the only doument that most will admit to being legally binding on them.  So, when they demand a phone call, or to be read their miranda rights whip it out throw it down and say show me where it is in the constitution and I will do it.  The look of confusion, oh shit and you motherfucker cycling through their face as they try to think of a response is priceless.

It is also hilarious to point out how they misqouted the constitution, which they will vehemently deny, pull one out of your pocket or posse box and show them where they fucked up.

Ultimately be safe, be aware (because while most are annoying idiots a minority are a serious threat) and if they become more numerous and/or more open get a system hammered out with your command, courts and preferably other local jurisdictions and nip the stupid in the bud before it flowers into full retard.

That is some great advise and I'm sure it will work based on my experiences with these nuts.  I'll remember some of this and use it next I need to.

That was wonderful.  Amazing.  We have some of these 'citizens' in my county.  No issues as of yet, but this thread is a good reminder.

Well, A, B, and C.

A: For all his years as police, he should have known, should have learned somewhere along the way that the biggest thing for an officer is credibility. An officer who loses that is practically useless. What is "ok" and what is "too far", can be a hard thing to determine. When I was doing belly dancing as a provost marshal, I had to wonder if that was too far. As time goes on, I tend to live my life by "The front page".....for all the things you do, you should be ready for them to show up on the front page of the paper tomorrow." Granted, there are a lot of things that I would hope would not....but if they do, I would own up to them. As cops and the like, we probably have to go a step further, not only how it affects us, but how it will affect any ops we are involved in. I can't see how being involved with this can go well.

B: Had a similar situation in military police. One was with a young patrolman who wondered why if Stevie Nicks could be a practicing witch, why couldn't he? "Because you're a 2nd class petty officer in the United States Navy and she's a rock star. You're a leader and it doesn't mix." As it was, I had to fire him eventually.......for loss of credibility.

C: I might have had a SC incident (or not) while I was in the Navy. There had been radio traffic around the quadrant about a man with "papers of importance to the United States". Didn't pay that much attention to it....until he showed up on my doorstep that night. The base command duty officer with NIS questioned him while I was outside wondering if his luggage was ticking. Finally, the leading petty officer of the barracks where he had been holding audience lost it, told him that he had messed up HIS barracks and to grab his junk and get the HELL out of there.....and he disappeared into the night.

Personally, I think he was a nut......but nut or not, be careful.

I watched that video as part of roll call training a couple weeks ago. It gives some decent information. My problem with it isn't the information but the group that put it out is the Southern Poverty Law Center. They have about as much credibility as Sovereign Citizens.

One part of the video that I pointed out to my bosses was that the chief used the term "Right Wing Radicals". When I hear those words I cringe. he video will no longer be shown at my department. I suppose we are right wing radicals.

I thought that video had a lot of value for Officer Safety.  You're not going to show it because you don't like their terminology ?

MPOETC has their own Non-Political training on Sovereign Citizens. I draw a line when a group formerly run by admitted and unapologetic communists, Anne and Carl Braden, has a say in police policies and who is or is not a hate group. The group is currently run by SPLC's Chief Trial Counsel Morris Dees and SPLC President and CEO Richard Cohen. Google them and read up. They're nothing but a bunch of hate baiters.

I've seen a few (tags) here in Memphis at a cheap motel in my ward. They seem to just move on. My partner locked one of um up. He wouldn't move out of a handicapped spot and just happened to have a warrant as an unregistered sex offender. Never see um out on the day shift.
