The big trick is not sounding words "out loud" in your head and just start recognizing words for the symbols that they are.  I find that anything intellectually demanding (beyond jr high level reading) I need to slow down anyway.  I find it unlikely that anyone can learn difficult concepts at 300 words/minute.  But hey, I'm all ears.

Speed reading is more about (accurately) recognizing and discarding fluff than it is about moving through text at a high rate of speed.

People have all these different methods when the real issue is just learning to ignore what's not 100% necessary.

They require practice with testing to develop comprehension.  The testing is part of the practice.
