The SMLE has the sexiest profile possible.

If it had receiver sights and not the shite leaf sights, it'd be the cat's ass.

SMLE, by a mile. Best combat bolt action ever made. The No. 4 is the top of the heap. Too bad they didn't chamber it in the best combat cartridge ever made. .30-06.

Damn, the Gunny really stunk it up with that 1903. As old as he is, that rifle was before his time.

Also:

1) The .30-06 was not the first smokeless cartridge; pretty sure the French had one long before we did.

2) The M1 was not the longest-serving rifle; both the 1903 and M16 were in front-line service longer.

Still, an entertaining bit of TV.

Correct response to all of these threads:  get them all, just to be sure you have the best one.

Gonna cause a lot of heartburn here but Gunny didn't know how to run that rifle. He puddled around and lost his ass. The No. 1 is faster but put somebody behind the bolt who knows what they're doing and the contest would of been a hell of a lot closer.

Yep, he was clearly struggling to work that bolt.

My favorite saying for years has been

The Americans had the best target rifle.

The German's had the best hunting rifle.

The British had the best combat rifle.

Oh, and my niece can shoot a 1903 better than the Gunny.

The 30-30 was the first commercial smokeless rifle cartridge.  I think.  Correct me if im wrong on this.

You are right, the first military smokeless round was the 30-40 followed by the 30-03.

The British guy wasn't running the Enfield that fast, either.

After shooting my 03 and a friends enfield.  I can attest that if I had to go into combat with a bolt action I'd choose the enfield.  5 more rounds, seemed like lower recoil.  And the action was broken in and could be functioned retarded fast, on top of it being the smoothest bolt action I've ever worked.  I did feel like I could be more precise with the 03 though.

8mm Lebel (France) was first, at least in terms of military rifle cartridges.

Lee Enfield over the M1903 any day of the fucking week.  No contest.

I am an American.  I take great pride in being an American.  The rest of the world can fuck right off, actually.

That said, I believe in Rule No. .303.

Major Thomas: "Tell me, Mr. Robertson-what was Lt Hancock's reason for putting Boer prisoners on open cattle cars on the trains?"

Capt. Robertson: "Well the Boers had been mining the lines and blowing up a lot of trains. He thought it might stop them."

Major Thomas: "Well did it?"

[Robertson looks at the prosecutor]

Major Thomas: "DID IT?"

Capt. Robertson: Well yes, but I don't think...

Close.

In WWII, the Germans fielded the Mauser - the best hunting rifle, the British fielded the Enfield - the best combat rifle of WWI, and the Americans fielded the Garand - the best combat rifle of WWII.

Gunny got smoked that first round.

I got my third Garand last week, a Korea era rifle that appears to be all date correct including the original stock.  The other two are WW2 era Springfields.

I've got an Enfield, it is a fine rifle I don't own a Springfield 1903 though.
