I need to build a set of steps up a hill to get to my Bol.  I have no idea on where to start on this.  Any help or ideas?  The steps would be 24 feet from the start to the top.  I have to pack everything in so wood is the only choice.  I do not know how to find the rise and run, but it is very steap because a ATV will not climb up it.  It is also mostly rock.

What do you want to build them with?  Concrete? Wood?  We need more info like rise and run, soil conditions, pics if possible...

Until further information, a couple of rules to think about is:
A rise is about 8 inches and the run (tread) is about 7 or so inches.

Definitely need a little more info or even a pic if you can get one.

A rise of 8" and a run of 7" will give you a very steep set of stairs...Your typical run should be no less than 10".

What you really need to find out is the elevation change from the bottom(first step) to the top(last step) that will give you an idea of how you can span, and if needed make a platform or longer run.

A "line of sight" measurement won't give you much to work with, imagine making a triangle that sits on the slope. You need to know the distance up(elevation), then over(total run), not the hypotenuse.

Pics/better info is needed for a decent calculation.

Okay, I re-read your origanal post!!  You might need a rope ladder, not stairs.
