So, I have already converted my RRA to a birdcage and collapsible, as the barrell was already "mysteriously" threaded when I got it some years ago.  My Bushy has yet to undergo any transformations.  Obviously, I want lugs on both, but wish to do this myself via the screw on front sights available from Armalite.  The question is, is it within the layman's grasp to take off the original front sights?  I know I'll have to work with the gas tube and such, so I want to know if this is a gunsmith-only deal, or if a handy fellow with a shit-ton of tools (me) could do this?  I'm pretty good with the guns and such, do my own trigger jobs and complete disassembly, yadda yadda, so I'm thinking this should be no problem, but have any of you done this, and if so, how was it?  Thanks!

you have to knock out the post pins. They only go one way. It can be a pain in the ass sometimes.

I'm not 100% clear on what you are doing, but I must warn you that the pins holding that front sight post in place gfo right through the barrel steel, and there does not appear to be a standard size or distance specs for where those holes are from one barrel manufacturer to another.

Also, unlike what RustedAce said, it aint always easy.  You have to figure ou which direction the tapered pin goes and then hope the pin wasn't put in cold and the barrel parkerized AFTER the pin was put in - which may be the case.
