I have a stand up freezer in the garage. Went to get something out of it today, and realized it was still running before I opened it. Normally you don't hear it till after you open it and close it. Also there was water along the inside top of the door and icicles forming on the top. I can't find any leaks, and it seems like the door is closing all the way. do door seals go bad? It doesn't seem wrinkled or anything, and can you buy just the door seal? Don't remember what type it is. Got it from sears so my bet is it is a kenmoore or somethinglike that. |

The ice forming tells you that there is a seal leak either the door wasn't closed or the seal isn't making contact well enough. As the warmer moist air enters the freezer the water vapor is condensed out of it forming that ice you saw. Without a continous stream of warm air the ice forms very slowly. |

That is what I thought. Checked it again later, and there was water in it again. I can hear air sucking in when I start to open it as the seal expands. Is it possilbe that this just happens since it is colder in the fridge? Has anyone replace a seal on the door before? |
Replacing the seal on a fridge door is easy. problem is the part might cost a lot ($75-100). This could also be a problem with the defrosting heater element or timer. Had this happen on my freezer once. GunLvr |
| I am a SEARS service technician and I do warranty work for HV/AC-R equiptment. Usually where ever the ice is, is where the air leak is. If the ice is forming at the top that is more than likely where the leak is. Most of the time this is caused by the door not closing all the way, like something inside hitting causing it to not close. If the gasket is not tore you don't need to change it, just make sure that it is attached to the door in all areas, if it is look for the spot where it is not sealing and use a hair drier to heat the gasket up so it can seal. Changing a door gasket is not fun. |
First rule of thumb... NEVER admit youre a Sears technician... Thats like saying you are a chef yet... flip burgers at McDonalds. Not doubting your talents, just your employer... long story and bitter feelings. HOWEVER, JoeyP has hit the nail on the head. Icicles are a sign where the door leak is. Unless the gasket is torn... DONT F&%k with it. |
