Hmmmm, liking it so far, not as woke as I thought it was going to be given Star Trek:Discovery! Now, if all the women could stop wearing Mascara - as they won't be in the 23rd Century - then I could appreciate it more. Just to say though Anson Mount makes a great Pike, even if the hairstyle is a bit bouffant! |

Did you get to the part where they show J6 footage to an alien planet as a warning of launching nukes on each other? Lol. Otherwise its not a bad show. But it might as well be called Star Trek: Uhura They crated a plot device that wedges her into almost every situation to show how independent, smart, and powerful she is. |

I’m not seeing woke shit either. It’s refreshing. The cast is well utilized, a real ensemble of capable adults who act like they are part of a team. All of the characters are well written and make sense. Pike is a modern take on Cullen Bohanan fro Hell on Wheels. He is a cowboy that got to see his own death. He is haunted by it, but recovering slowly as the series progresses. Spock is growing on me. The Short Trek of his first day on the ship really set the tone. He is exploring his human side in his youth, which is causing problems for him. He is starting to grow closer to his colder Vulkan half seen later. Noonian-Sing is a pleasant surprise. She reminds me of Drummer of Expanse. A tactical officer that really takes the job seriously and has a lone survivor quality that makes her sympathetic. Una is another surprise. She is the Anti-Marry Sue. She hides her augmented biology, just like Bashir. I like her, as she subverts the “powerful female lead” by dialing it back to being human. Dr. M’benga may be my favorite character. He is smart, has a gracious manner, and acts how I would expect a doctor to act. The fact that he is a fisherman says a lot. Nurse Chappel is growing on me. She is fun. Promiscuous, and a flirt in her personal life, but competent and capable in an emergency. Cool headed. Like a real ER nurse that is on top of their game. Uhura is like Hoshi. Having her cross train has been fun to watch. She is a little bit too “good” at things, but her social awkwardness balances it. Horack is an arrogant dick. It works to balance out the crew and contrast what humans find acceptable, versus a brilliant engineer without a filter. He reminds me of Odo. Ortegas is comic relief. Yeah, the hot shit pilot. But her facial expressions are priceless. When the Shepherds were talking aggressively towards pike, she had that “you’ve got to be shitting me” look on her face. It was great. |
