All the reviews I've seen have been positive. I'll probably rent it when it comes out on DVD. I fucking hate theaters. H-A-T-E them. I hate theaters also, my wife and myself see maybe 2-3 movies a year in theaters. Star Trek was worth it. Go to an early showing to minimize the asshats. |

I heard a review on WTOP that did NOT fill me with warm fuzzies...it was a positive review by a female critic and she made it sound like a frigging CHIC FLICK!!! She said all these scifi and comic book movies are so dark and the characters are deeply flawed and that ST was a welcome relief, upbeat, LIGHTHEARTED(!!!), etc.

Ok, my take:
- It was a tired, played out plot that has been in almost every action movie since the creation of action movies. I literally told my friends what the plot was going to be based solely on the 30 second preview I had seen of the movie and was right. , which is shit. The real Kirk would have flew around the sun and put everything the way it was before, he wouldn't stand for aliens traveling through time, killing his father and destroying Vulcan. The only thing they actually did right was McCoy, Kirk sleeping with green women and killing the random red shirt guy.

I'll chime in and say it is 1000x better then all its predecessors BUT not as good as it could be.
The fun stuff is in the back plot where we see why Kirk and Spock joined Star Fleet. Casting was excellent with Chris Pine as James T. Kirk. Some will remember him as Darwin Tremor, the psycho skinhead hitman in "Smokin Aces". Nimoy makes an appearance as "Old Spock" which I would have never done. When you script a franchise reboot of this magnitude, why cripple the sensation with paying homage to the retired vanguard? It's done to often and is cheesy. After 50 plus years they had to do something or the brand could die out. I am a fan of scifi, I own many episodes and movies of my favorites. I own no ST movies or tv episodes. I will buy this as soon as it comes out. I can understand why a straight up purist may not like it, but look at it this way. It was either this or no more new trek ever. |

So, is it? I heard that same review and do not agree with her assessment. While I am not a huge Trek fan like my husband, I have seen enough episodes and the movies often enough to at least appreciate the series and characters. I thought it was a pretty good movie, exploring the history behind the friendship between Spock and Kirk, and learning how Bones really acquired his nickname. We went to the matinee yesterday, pretty good crowd (80% male) and there was a good round of applause at the end. A chick flick? No way. |

Thought it was damned enjoyable (and I am old enough to have watched TOS on its FIRST run, too!). They didn't mess with the original story line enough to object, with one exception (the planet Vulcan, that's all I will say, to avoid spoilers). I particularly liked the scenes in the bowels of the Enterprise that look like they were shot in a giant multi-story power station! I mean this thing was supposed to be as big as an aircraft carrier and yet the early sets were so small and claustrophobic (and I understand about TV and budgets and all that). This film gets that more right. |
