My wife loves shooting, but has a really bad startle reflex. I mean I could simply walk around a corner after going to the bathroom and she screams. It's this horrifying scream that really freaks me out so times. Of course this makes going to the range difficult, but she loves shooting and wants to get into the more competitive/combat/defensive shooting. It is not a matter of caliber, because we have been to the range by ourselves, and only shooting her Walther P22.

We know why she has it, I am just curious if anyone has ever dealt with this before, and if they have any good remedies?

Not sure how you would go about working on that.

Women are hardwired with it.

And can be the source of much comic relief

so she's the one that puts you in a submission hold when you try to snuggle with her at night?

An exaggerated startle respones is often a symptom of PTSD.

I used to give my ex an unloaded gun and watch her flinch when she pulled the trigger.  She would never know when  it was unloaded and this seemed to help her realize what she was doing better without the boom.

She conquered it in days.  YMMV

when I first started shooting large bore handguns, I had a pretty nasty flinch.  I cant remember who here suggested it, but it did come from AR15.com.  Anyway, the suggestion was to get a large number of round, 500 or so, load up my mags, and just focus on keeping my eyes open and watching the weapon function.  No focusing on a specific target just making sure the rounds are going into the berm.  It was quite effective, and broke my weapon in quite nicely.

You just have to get used to a controlled explosion in your hand.

She doesn't have a flinch, I can balance a quarter on the end of a barrel while she pulls the trigger.

Have you tried desensitizing?  It'll piss her off but, worth a shot?

Not yet, I could just try scaring her more. LOL might be fun.

I'd be jealous if she had Spontaneous Orgasm Syndrome.

...but you got the Scared Screamer Syndrome there.

Both maladies stem from traumatic childhoods.

Been there. No cure. It's amusing at first but then you realise your partner is "detached" from her surroundings, will never have SA and is the perfect victim.

Rob Pincus has studied the human startle response and has incorporated it into the training he provides. Check out his website and articles at http://www.icetraining.us].

He is the first person I thought of when I read your post, and I got a lot out of the class I took from him.

I think the remedy is to acknowledge and accept it. It's natural, so work it into your life!
