[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Stealing Internet Access (Page 1 of 2)

| Well, this afternoon our modem crossed over to the otherside leaving me cold and lonely without ARFCOM. The Cable guys said they would call someone out to fix it, but being a holiday weekend I told them wait until tuesday. To get me through the weekend my plan is to bring my laptop down to the interstate exit and hook up one one of the motel or truckstop wireless networks. So what is the general ARFCOM outlook on an Internet Bandit? |
IBYACAC. In Before You Are Called a Criminal. |
| not sure which is worse, that you are so desperate that you would actually do that, or that you did not know it is so popular that there is a subculture around it. |
Those network systems are meant for paying customers. Why not just go to a McDonalds or Starbucks or Borders Books where they offer it in exchange for a $2.00 cup of coffee?? The fact you have to ask indicates you know it's wrong.
|
| It's no differant than listening to last nights UFC match through the apartment walls. If they don't secure their network, then its just like listening to the radio...free. As long as you are only using bandwidth and not attempting to exploit someones PC. Thats my take on it. |
When you are broadcasting it over the airwaves, it's fair game. Big difference. If you don't want people watching your television from the street, close the drapes. |
|
If your neighbor puts up a bright light in his back yard, are you an electricity thief for allowing it to also light up your yard? If he runs his sprinklers so that they also water your lawn, does that make you a water thief? If your neighbor doesn't bother to turn on his encryption, he either (a.) doesn't care if other neighbors piggyback on his network, or (2.) isn't smart enough to figure out that someone could piggyback on it. Either way, I don't see anything wrong in using it, as long as you aren't using it in a malicious manner, or eating up enough bandwidth to inconvenience him. |
|
In my mind it comes under the heading of fair use, if it’s unsecured. If you’ve gotta hack their encryption then it’s stealing. It’s like how water fountains are free for public use. I doubt that these people are paying by the bit. They have a certain sized connection and can use all of it. Good manners would dictate that you don’t put too much strain on their network by downloading huge files of course. |
+1 I use Air Snare and WEP to keep me extra safe on my WiFi |
Bullshit... The broadcast of 1's and 0's is a paid service. There are too many places that will provide you unlimited access as a paying customer, as my examples illustrate -- why steal it?? If you are already going out to "get your fix", which is pretty sad in itself, why not go to a place that welcomes your traffic for a small transaction fee?
There are laws against that sort of thing too, as you know. |
WEP? "extra safe"?
|
Whatever makes you feel better about being a thief. BTW, exercise some reading comprehension. He is going to wardrive and find a link up from a business who provides the service to its PAYING customers. It's called integrity, get some. |
wow. so if you wife throws her leg up for half your buds, it is okay for them to tap it, because you didnt but a chastity belt on her? |
Ok, I should reword that. I use Air Snare to help me keep an eye on my WiFi on top of my WEP because even I can crack WEP. |
So if I leave my car doors unlocked, then I'm donating my car to the neighborhood for free joyrides?
|
Go WPA or go home |
If they dont ask you for an access code or a room number then its pretty obvious that they dont give a shit. That being said, why not find a place in your town that offers it for free? I go to a barbeque resturant/microbrewery once a week and set up my laptop right on the bar! I also go to the library quite a bit and hook up there. |
Spending to much on ammo and guns to afford a new router. Want to donate one? |
|
I wonder if, at the next machine gun shoot, I can just grab one of the M16's off the many UNSECURED shooting benches and start shooting it??? I mean, it was left unsecured --- fair game right??? According to some I should be golden.... I can just explain to the astonished owner that he should have secured those items he didn't want used by all. How fucking ludicrous. The thing that stops me from doing such things is my INTEGRITY. |
at my local Mickey Dee's, it's $2.35 PER LOGIN... if you hang up after 2 minutes and log in again, it's another $2.35... it is NOT free. I have made friends with the management of a couple of hotels in town... one offers wifi, the other has wifi AND an Ethernet connection... I can use the E-net if the meeting room isn't occupied. |
Quite a bit actually. If you launch a DoS or some other hacking attack from my router's IP. Guess who's going to be the first to be investigated and accused? |
through my superb dective skills i have concluded that you have already done the deed. or else how would you have posted this?
|
I would, but I spent all my $$ on guns and ammo too
|
Yep, if you can figure out a way to shoot it (1.) without causing any wear whatsoever, (2.) without causing any fouling that will impose additional cleaning chores on the owner, and (3.) at a time when nobody else wants to shoot it, then more power to ya!
|
Yeah? Please indicate where I stated it was free? I didn't. Most of these places will waive their flat fee if you buy something from them. Some are locality dependent, but the above places HERE will allow you access if you buy something. |
Or I could just use my integrity as my guide, and avoid doing such lecherous things at all. |
Wow......and I thought I had seen all the lengths people will go to justify wrongful acts...
|
Ah, but now you've wandered away from the original question. Once again, to refresh your memory: If I'm using your network in a manner that isn't malicious and isn't inconveniencing you, where's the harm? |
You know, an extra AP might be worth the fun. ![]() I live in an apartment complex with a bunch of undocumented workers, so it shouldn't take long for them to commit some criminal activity if i leave the honeypot out. |
