Well, this afternoon our modem crossed over to the otherside leaving me cold and lonely without ARFCOM. The Cable guys said they would call someone out to fix it, but being a holiday weekend I told them wait until tuesday. To get me through the weekend my plan is to bring my laptop down to the interstate exit and hook up one one of the motel or truckstop wireless networks. So what is the general ARFCOM outlook on an Internet Bandit?

you'll be fine.  hot spots are made for surfing the web.

Well, from a practical standpoint I wouldn't, unless you are using some sort of encryption software such as GhostSurf.  Otherwise, you're communicating in the clear over an unsecure network.

Those network systems are meant for paying customers.  Why not just go to a McDonalds or Starbucks or Borders Books where they offer it in exchange for a $2.00 cup of coffee??

The fact you have to ask indicates you know it's wrong.

I just saying I don't think it is a big deal, and I don't care if people steal it from me either.  IMO if it is unsecured it is fair game.

It's no differant than listening to last nights UFC match through the apartment walls. If they don't secure their network, then its just like listening to the radio...free. As long as you are only using bandwidth and not attempting to exploit someones PC. Thats my take on it.

When you are broadcasting it over the airwaves, it's fair game. Big difference.

If you don't want people watching your television from the street, close the drapes.

If your neighbor puts up a bright light in his back yard, are you an electricity thief for allowing it to also light up your yard?

If he runs his sprinklers so that they also water your lawn, does that make you a water thief?

If your neighbor doesn't bother to turn on his encryption, he either (a.) doesn't care if other neighbors piggyback on his network, or (2.) isn't smart enough to figure out that someone could piggyback on it. Either way, I don't see anything wrong in using it, as long as you aren't using it in a malicious manner, or eating up enough bandwidth to inconvenience him.

In my mind it comes under the heading of fair use, if it’s unsecured. If you’ve gotta hack their encryption then it’s stealing. It’s like how water fountains are free for public use.

I doubt that these people are paying by the bit. They have a certain sized connection and can use all of it. Good manners would dictate that you don’t put too much strain on their network by downloading huge files of course.

Bullshit...

The broadcast of 1's and 0's is a paid service.  There are too many places that will provide you unlimited access as a paying customer, as my examples illustrate -- why steal it??

If you are already going out to "get your fix", which is pretty sad in itself, why not go to a place that welcomes your traffic for a small transaction fee?

If you don't want people watching your television from the street, close the drapes.

There are laws against that sort of thing too, as you know.

Leaving your network unsecured and bitching about other people using it is like leaving a 6 pack in your convertible and bitching when someone swipes it. Sure, it still theft....but one should secure things they find valuable.

If they dont ask you for an access code or a room number then its pretty obvious that they dont give a shit.

That being said, why not find a place in your town that offers it for free?

I go to a barbeque resturant/microbrewery once a week and set up my laptop right on the bar!

I also go to the library quite a bit and hook up there.
