When I was a teenager, a friend's folks had a step van that was converted to a camper.  It worked great.  With the price of fuel now, it looks like solid step vans with about 100-150K miles are going fairly cheap.  Not sure about the mileage, though.  

Have any posters here done this?   Problems/suggestions?

Dont worry about the mileage , I have 412,000 on one of my Chevys .  I can't help you on converting one . I use my trucks for deliveries.  Fuel mileage is about 10-11 mpg with highway and some city driving .
