Like the title implies, I need one for my wife as part of her Christmas. Nothing too expensive because she tends to lose stuff. Just a decent one.

Mid-range Littman. Love my cardio III but too much $$$ if she loses things.

Littmans are some of the best ones out there.

Cardiology III is by far the best.

The Littmans are the Colt Firearms 1911 of the stethescope world. A top dog others try to unseat.

However, for something to put in the lab coat and do a good job at a decent price, just get a generic one with twin tubes and a reversible bell/headpiece.

They work fine, and if you are not a cardiologist trying to detect paradoxical splitting of heart sounds, you will be fine.

Just a thought . Isnt that kinda like her buying you a hammer for Christmas?

Just get her a Littman Classic II or something that wont break the budget but is a solid scope.

You don't want to get one with dual tubes, the single tubes sound better.

Littman makes a lightweight model that is $60-70, look into that one.  They even make it in pink, etc.

What is she using it for?
A Littmann Cardiology 3 or Classic 2 SE will be great if she's doing basic things with them.  Obviously, if she's a pediatric cardiologist or something, they may not work as well.

Littman II SE.

Love it, and it's hung with me through a deployment and long beyond.

I also agree with Littman ftw! My ears are on the bad side from too many booms, rpm, and the invention of the walkman. A quality steth was a must for me.

Littmanm Classic II SE is a good standard, just make sure you get a longer length (should all be 27").

I'll go against the grain on the premium 'scope and suggest the Welch Allen Harvey Elite if you're almost a baller and not willing to spend the coin on an electronic one.  Screw the Littmann Cardio III, and the Master Cardio's stupid combined bell/diaphram sucks the butt.

So, any opinions on Littman?

I've gone through several over the years...each of them has been "lost".

I carry around a cheap disposable nowadays. I only use it for basics so I don't need anything fancy. Funny how it hasn't disappeared.

I'm going to buck the trend here a bit and suggest a Littmann.

The Classic II is a good lightweight scope. That's what I use the most. I also have a couple Cardiology 3s that are great. My Cardiology 2 that I got the first week of med school is still trucking along fine after 12 years of heavy use. They are the popular scope for a reason.

What you get depends on two factors....what she's going to use it for and how much can you afford to lose.

If she's a doctor she needs at least a mid level.  If she's a specialist...especially cardiology or pediatrics she needs
the best you can afford.

If she's anything but an MD virtually any brand will do adequately.

Because nobody has mentioned it yet, I'd suggest looking into a brand called Littman. I've had a Classic 2 for a while now, and it's a good one.

I have had/used a Littman II SE for the last 15 years. I had to replace the ear buds once.

Get her a CT Scan machine too. Those things are great.

Steeles.com (and others, I'm sure) will let you engrave the stethoscope for a few extra dollars.  They have pretty good prices, too.

Fixed it for ya.
Nursing is hard work. I'll +1 the sticky finger environment, though. One of my stethoscopes - my first one, pretty sentimental - disappeared for 3 months. I found it with the nametag partially torn off.

ETA:

For Sique's suggestion, here's a CT scanner for sale on eBay.  It's a 2005, less than 500,000 rotations.

Ouch - that sucks. Are you putting "steal me" stickers on them, or just having bad luck?  Even though stethoscopes are replaceable, you do get attached to your own... and don't really want to be wearing someone else's earwax. My first med school stethoscope was a Card II SE, the one that disappeared. It was recovered in a pile of goo and sludge after a particularly nasty surgery, and took lots of cleaning. In the interim, someone gifted me a heavily used & abused CIII.

Seeing a pattern?   From the time I got my license to now is Littman.  CurrentlyI'm using a master cardiology.
