I've recently purchased a '98 Ford Ranger 2.5L. Unfortunately the gas pedal is a little bit sticky before it actually opens the throttle. From closed throttle to the slightest bit open it is sticky. I checked and it is not in the cable, since I disconnected the cable from the throttle body and manually twisted the throttle. It's not sticky anywhere but right off of idle. You press on the pedal and nothing, nothing, then it breaks and the pedal is normal. Besides lubing the return spring on the throttle body, which I've done, what else is there to do to cure a sticky throttle?

Try cleaning the throttle body butterfly with carb and choke cleaner.  Remove the inlet boot and spray the visible side of the plate with cleaner and wipe off the hard to remove crud with a lint free rag.  Reinstall the boot and start the engine to clear out excess cleaner.  You may have to hold throttle wide open to clear the cleaner out.  Don't over speed the engine.  If you get a lot of cleaner down the intake it can hydro lock the engine.  Be carefull.

Once the engine is warmed up pull the inlet boot back just enough to put the straw of the carb cleaner in.  Keep one hand on the throttle lever and squirt small bursts into the inlet to clean the downstream side of the throttle plate.

With the engine stopped you can go in with your rag and clean off the back side of the throttle plate and any hard to remove crustys on the throttle body.

You can set a check engine light doing this.  Find out how to clear it or have Autozone etc. check and clear it.

Try this first.  It's cheap and easy.

I have seen worn out Throttle Position Sensors cause the throttle to stick.  Mark the position of the TPS before removing.  Check the position of the tabs that engage the throttle shaft.  If it needs replaced you may need instructions on  how to adjust the new sensor.

I clean throttle plates with the engine off.  No need to have it running, don't use a large amount of cleaner and hold the plate open for a few minutes, most of the that stuff will evaporate quickly.
