I have a lot of photos I need to save/store of my child.

I've kinda been out of the technology loop for a while, and would like to know your opinions on the best means of storing these pics.

Are CD/DVDs still a viable option?  Thumbdrives, or SD cards?  Portable hard drive?

I've been trying to get everything on some thumbdrives I have, but, the largest in my possession is 4GB

Save them all on your PCs hard drive, then back that hard drive up to an external one.

Would something like THISbe suitable?  I realize there are much larger drives out there, but, this one seems inexpensive enough.

My machine is not new enough to have USB 3.0, will that matter?

how much data are we talking about?

thumb drives and cards go up to 32 gb now.

DVD's are 4.5 GB

Blueray are about 50 cents each and they store 25GB
The burner is around 50 bucks.

1tb drives are 99 dollars

And literally I do 2 or 3 different types of backup.

I have an extra copy on a seperate hd on my main computer.

I burn it all to DVD or blueray for movies

I have an external drive that is only plugged in for backup's

and I just built a SAN that has raid protection to back it all up when I don't get around to putting it on the external.

Just depends on how much you have to back up and how much you want to spend.

huh, for some reason I cant get the hotlink button to work on my new tablet...

I have one of those in 1TB, it will work fine on USB 2.0. Get one as big or bigger than the HDD in your PC. I'd pay the $30 and go 1TB. Backing up to DVD/Blu ray isn't a bad idea, but it would be more difficult to keep them organized. I would use that as a third line of defense and store the copies off site.

Others will disagree, but I will tell you what I am doing with all of my important videos and photos.  I store them in Amazon's Glacier storage service.  Pay for what you use and it costs $0.01 per gigabyte per month and eleven nines of durability.

I'd be happy to go into more depth if you would like.

We need to know how much data you need to store. 1TB external hard drives are nice but if you only have 10-20 GBs of data its kind of overkill if thats all you are concerned about backing up. You could  pick up two of these for 1/2 the price of one external hard drive and always have a backup in case one fails.

I really don't have a whole lot of data, I guess.

My pc HD is 250g, and I haven't quite filled it yet, I think there's still 70-80g left.

Granted, not everything I have is on the HD...

I have the feeling that 500g drive in my OP will be more than sufficient.

Where do you have the pictures stored on your computer? My Pictures? If so, open up my computer, navigate to C:, users, the user account where pictures are stored, right click on my pictures, and go to properties. This will index all of the files in that folder, and tell you how big it is. After you do that, tell us, and we can point you in the right direction for backup media. I have seen people who say a ton of pictures end up @ 250mb, and "a few" come out to 8 gigs of pictures.

I doubt I have more than 5-6g of pcs.  What I said above was for my entire hd.

I know I have more than 4g, because I remember looking and thinking to myself, this ain't gonna fit on a 4g thumbdrive.

The real question is how to make backups.  All storage mediums may fail, so if you can't afford backups, you can't afford data.

If only somebody had suggested a storage platform with eleven nines of durability.

I saw your mention of 11 nines of durability, but, have no idea what its supposed to mean.  I probably won't be interested anyway, if I ever find out.

Seriously, I've pretty much decided a large thumbdrive or small ext HD will ore than suffice for my needs

If you put 10,000 files in there you have a 51% chance of losing one every ten million years.

Don't have to worry about coping to an external hard disk that may fail or get stolen.
don't have to worry about how much you're backing up, available from anywhere and encrypted.
