Scoops Troop wins for me simply because their story arc was far more entertaining, their dialog was pretty good, and their adventure functionally drives the season.

At this point I'm only watching it for the music, Nancy Wheeler and Mrs. Wheeler

Hopper's character will be back if the actor doesn't demand too much salary at next negotiation

Everyone on the show got a big pay bump in season 3, so I'd imagine the entire main cast is locked in for season 4 at their new rates.
Folks need to remember this isn't Game of Thrones, it is a fairly predictable "light adventure / sci fi" show that has literally only killed off a single second tier character (Bob) up until this season and even then they brought back Sean Austin for new scenes. Shit, I bet they bring back Billy next season for flashbacks or new fill scenes as well... just like how they can't seem to let go of Barb. Her picture appears in every season so far. In the famous slightly altered words of hollywood cowboys everywhere, if Hopper doesn't come back next season I'll eat my hat. |

Just before the laser shutdown you see a bunch of Russians in Hazmat suits. They weren't there before so they must have traveled through the gate. They took Hopper back with them. |

I agree and also the whole point of Ele losing her powers at the end was written in so that we don't get to question why she cannot see Hop when she does her blindfold thing...but I suspect she will get her powers back and see him in the jail cell.

i grew up in a much smaller town in the 80’s. We had gays, they might not have all crammed it down our throats, but they existed. Gay marriage was already a thing in the 70’s. A town with a real mall would have openly gay people if my town of 1k did. Maybe my town was odd, but most boys were chasing tail by 4th grade, not catching much-But making our orientation known.
I don’t know why they depowered 11-other than to keep her from looking for Hopper. There were no Russians by the time the military arrived. The lab was compromised, those that could evacuated. No reason to think that Hopper did not dive off the platform or be abducted in the last second-hell wheelborrow could not see out when she pulled the switches. Season 4 will include 11 getting her powers back, doing a search for Hopper and realizing he is not dead. It is the only real reason they removed her power to start wit’s. Most likely it will include the other’s-making it a superhero move rather than an 80’s Bond flick. |

Further more to add to my case that Hopper is in the Upside Down and not the Russian prison. Alexei who is the sort of project leader. Explains to Hopper, Joyce and the Conspiracy guy that they "key" was used to break through a barrier and open a door way between worlds. It sounds a lot more like he's talking about the Earth and other dimensions AKA "worlds". Finally finished it up last night.
Overall I thought it was really good. Started a bit slow but by the middle of the season I was really in to it. More comical bits than I remember in the first two seasons. Lots of old movie references, some I caught and some I am reading about. Like the Back to Future bits and hub cap spinning in one scene was a back to the future bit. There were some times when the "filler" got a little old. I would be thinking, enough with the BS, get on with the movie. I can't imagine what season 4 will be like. I almost wish they would have made this the last one, hope they don't screw it up. |

Just a question for those floating the Hopper theories:
Click To View Spoiler If the Russian's gate in Hawkins was functional, how come they are always shown as still "opening" it? Nothing about their operation clearly showed a functional "open" gateway. They appeared to be "ramping up" to have a functional gateway though. The other aspect is if the Russians had an open, functional gate in Russia wouldn't the Mind Flayer still be operational instead of just dropping dead the second the Hawkins gate machine explodes? The most likely "in story" explanation is that the Hawkins gate was still opening, and at some point it was open wide enough for a demigorgon to come through and get caged, and then subsequently transported back to Russia via normal earth realm means (Lynx).
Another aspect is how hostile and toxic the upside down dimension has been shown to be in the previous two seasons. Its air is toxic, it is filled with dangerous life forms, and season 2 established that it quickly deteriorates and breaks human machines / equipment into non-functional states (it kept burning out the sensor station). Plus the doorways to the upside down directly correlate to their real world locations... so if you open a door to the upside down in Hawkins in the lab and pass through it, you emerge in the upside down equivalent of the lab. For the Russians to use the upside down as a gateway they would still need to traverse the immense distance from the gate in Hawkins to the location of the exit gate in Russia... implying they would need upside down based infrastructure including vehicles (and a gate on their end large enough to pass those vehicles into the upside down). Or they found some way to make the non-functional upside down equivalent vehicles work. My theory still is that when the gate machine in Hawkins exploded it created some sort of dimensional warp that Hopper was caught in, throwing him into the upside down... but he was thrown into the upside down of the current underground Russian base / Hawkins lab that has no connections back to Russia. So when season 4 starts Hopper is going to be trapped in Hawkins upside down looking for a way out. The second part of my theory is that "the American" referenced in the season end stinger is "poppa" AKA Doctor Brenner. We never saw him die in season 1, and based on how Will was captured and put into a pseudo "Aliens" facehugger thing my assumption has always been that Brenner was not killed by the season 1 demigorgon but was instead captured by it like Will was and taken to a similar fate. Then we are shown in season 2 that there are hundreds of demigorgons, so we most likely had an Alien Isolation situation with season 1 where the audience thought there was only one demigorgon but in reality there were many... we only just saw one at a time. So the demigorgon that nabs Brenner is different from the one that Eleven disintegrates. Finally the last piece of my nutjob theory is that Brenner is "rescued" by the Russians, or he emerges from the upside down like Eleven did. Long rambling crap filled post short, if Hopper is in Russia that is a massive leap of convenience that the existing story doesn't support. |

The upside down seems to be different from the empty, black dimension that Eleven used to spy on the Russians. That one definitely allows travel between USA and Russia.
