School me on getting rid of my cable bill. Whats my options and what equipment do I need? I have a big screen tv in the living room, a small under the counter tv in the kitchen, and two tv's in bedrooms. Oh and can I still watch the local news channels?
We don't watch much tv. My wife has a couple of shows she likes and the kids watch a little Phineas and Ferb and the occasional cartoon. |
| For Netlfix, all you need is a $8 a month Netflix Streaming account and a device for your TV. Go to Netflix.com and they list all the approved devices. I bought a $139 Sony Blu-Ray DVD player that has built in wireless. The player connects to my home wireless network. The DVD player has a menu that offers a couple dozen stations where you can watch the latest movies, older movies, TV shows, get music and much more. Many offer HD quality if your internet connection has the bandwidth to support it. Regular software updates provide newer channels as they become available. |

Also Amazon is offering steaming of certain movies/tv shows if you are an Amazon Prime member. So $79/year = $6.60/month. |
| In the we use a Roku player to stream Netflix, Hulu plus, Amazon, Pandora Radio etc.... I stream Netflix and Zune to my Xbox 360 in my man cave. I'll probably get a Roku Player for the cave very soon. We got rid of satellite, but I do plan on installing a television antenna in about a month or two to pick up local stations via the airwaves. |

It also said you could use a video game console. I have a Wii, will that work? Maybe I should just get a blue ray player since my dvd player crapped out. What about dedicating a PC to it? I have a couple of Dells at work that I could use if that works. |

I use a TV antenna aimed directly at the Empire State Building for basic channels.
I use a couple Roku players to stream netflix. I use a PS3 to watch BluRay rental from Netflix and also to stream Netflix. I use my 24" iMac to watch stuff directly from the web like TV Network websites, Hulu, etc. |

Real stupid question........How do I get the Wii to stream the video? It says to go the portal and hit Netflix and enter your account. I assume I have to get the Wii synced somehow with my wireless internet? The only thing I have ever done with the Wii is play the occasional game. |

For my PS3 i use Netflix and http://tversity.com/ TVersity will stream just about anything to your PS3. It will also transcode anything the PS3 doesn't have a codec for. |
| I just bought a Roku XD with the goal of getting rid of my $86 month DirecTV bill. I will replace the dish with Hulu Plus and Netflix streaming for $16 a month. I am a bit disappointed that many of the movies available for streaming on Netflix are not HD. But the low price outweighs that concern. |

apple TV with netflix and you tube built in is $99 ... I have an iMac as well. Looks like you can play your iTunes songs on the TV and mobileme gallery too. Interesting. Not sure why I would need to rent movies and shows from Apple tho when you can netflix it. |
