Talk to your doctor, and try a small dose of fluoxetine.  That's generally the starting path before you go go more and stronger meds.

Depends on the medication and how your taking it I guess. I would be a lot more comfortable having something like a PRN benzo (the absolute only way I would take a benzo) vs. a daily SSRI for anxiety.

But I really like what the other poster said about stress, find the source of it and maybe dial that back? I also don’t know if you are similar to me and introverted with not a ton of friends, but it helps to talk about the stress or whatever with close confidants and friends. Heck you can always shoot me a message if you’re desperate.

Anxiety sucks, and if you were diagnosed with ADHD then you are a lot like me and your anxiety stems from not being able to organize one’s thoughts. Yes medicine really helps with this.

Good luck OP! Get the quality of life you are after!

Have you had an image of your adrenal glands. Adrenal adenomas and tumors can cause unregulated cortisol production.

I suffer from ocd.  Ssri are off the table due to a folic acid deficiency (gene mutation).

I was given klonopin as needed.  I take it when I need it and it helps.

Otherwise I just do my best.

The medication has allowed me to do things  wouldn’t otherwise do.

I just make sure to not let it become a habit!

For those that mention exercise.  I work out 3-4 days a week and have been for years.  It doesn’t help when you have an actual disorder.  It’s far from a cure.

My experience was getting actual anxiety meds was a fight. All the dr wanted to prescribe was anti depressants. I'm not depressed, I'm anxious. I finally got on Buspar and it's been a life changer. Don't get saddled up with anti depressants. Stay the fuck away from those.

How much physical activity do you engage in?
Walking works, as does cycling. A good pair of walking shoes cost a lot less than drugs, and most bike shops have used ones for fairly reasonable prices. You don't need anything fancy.

I started work for NASA a few months before the Apollo launch pad fire. It was a rough time figuring out how to do away with the pure O2 atmosphere in the capsule and fireproof the electronics; long hours, tight schedule to beat the Rooskies to the Moon. I bought a horse -- she completely changed my life. I became invulnerable to stress while others were getting ulcers. A couple of hours with her riding through the Palmetto flats, or just grooming her, cleared my head of problems.

ETA: It was not only just being with Gypsy, but knowing that, at the end of the day, she was there to alleviate my stress.
I miss that little mare.

My heart aches for you O. P.

I had the honor of being the last one to run a longtime family business. My business was foundering, my unwed teenage daughter got pregnant, and my ex became an alcoholic. It was the perfect storm of stress. I ended up closing the business. Fast forward three years or so, I went to a trade show and saw a lot of the old sales reps I used to deal with, and not one, not two, but at least five of them made the comment "Whamo you look 10 years younger!"

Detachment was the best thing for reducing my stress. My daughter gave me a wonderful grandson, I threw the wife out of the house, and my stress levels went down dramatically. Some time later a therapist helped me deal with the spouse / ex.

I wish you success.

I don't believe our ancestors had all these different diagnosis. I believe they worked hard to survive until they didn't.

I grew up with parents that expected you to work hard behave and shut the fuck up.

People today have unreal expectations. Life's hard you just have to do it.

I hear you but I've also seen suffering in silence and what it does to you. My dad's ptsd was a perfect example. He was silent till he couldnt be anymore.

Hearing "I should have been there! I left them behind." From him and seeing him fighting the enemy in his sleep left a lasting impression on me.

I grew up a hell of a lot because of that man and not always for the most positive reasons.

I am not comparing the two by any means. Far from it but we as a society are told to suck it up and push through but for some at moments that's not always easy.  If you need help....Get it.

The last three and half years have been beyond stressful trying to deal with two failing business's.
Last fall my Dr prescribed Buspar.  I tried.  About four weeks in I had to quit taking it as it wasn't helping and made sleeping worse as I ended up wide awake for four straight days.  Haven't tried anything else.

This spring things had started improving but my business partner wants to retire next year and I'm ready to say fuck it myself.   I'll go work at a box store or something and whistle the day away.  I can do 8 hours days standing on my head.   Business is underwater but we only owe ourselves and not the bank.   The property is worth the most anyway.  Might have a buyer that wants the building and machines.  So, now I have a different kind of stress I'm dealing with until we figure something out.  Either way, I know there is an end coming.  Just don't know how it ends.

How you hanging in there, OP?

The intersection of ADD/ADHD and anxiety is a real bitch.

I'd start working on some anxiety management techniques and get some talk therapy. That's what will help you in the long run.

You can also look at meds as a bridge to help you get to a better place. SNRIs can help with both ADHD and anxiety.

Just make sure you get into some sort of therapy to go along with the pills. Otherwise, you're just putting kicking the can down the road.

You may want to take a look at ketamine therapy.  In the past few years, it has been discovered to be pretty effective in treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other things. It supposedly rewires the brain via neurological plasticity.  There are several ways it's administered.  The sublingual tablets are cheapest and can be taken at home.  The IV and nasal sprays are very expensive and must be taken under medical supervision in an office.

There are a bunch of Youtube videos on the subject.

I have a stressful job managing large projects, and frequently joke that my job is to worry about things and then work to make sure they don't happen.

I have trouble sleeping because I can't turn off my brain and I will instead worry about some real or imaginary problem instead of sleeping.  The stress got to me in 2004 and I started having heart issues.

Eliminating caffeine and decongestants helped with my heart issues, but it took two cardiac ablations surgeries to completely fix them.  I still avoid caffeine and decongestants out of habit and to sleep better.

Beyond that, I have no great advice.  Melatonin helps me, but I still struggle with sleeping, especially on Sunday nights before the work week starts.  I plan to solve that problem by retiring in January.

Good luck.

OP, just keep in mind that throughout all this, it's temporary. It can be easy to lose perspective when you're down and when anxiety is bad. You've got the power to change how you feel, and you will do that. It's just going to take some time.

A fun read on the topic of anxiety is The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck. The audio book is an entertaining listen. https://www.amazon.com/dp/0062457713?lv=shuf&channelId=500&plpRedirect=mhFallback

Buspar worked great for me for about 4 months.  Then quit working.  I tried upping the dose but it made me more anxious

That's wild. I've been on it for several years at this point. It may have even helped me quit drinking, I don't know. Been sober almost 4 years now. Life is great.
