I need help learning the proper way to wind the line onto the spool. The machine is an Echo SRM-210 and has a dual line head that you bump on the ground to dispense more line. It seems that no matter how I wind the line onto the spool I always have problems with the line feeding when I bump it. I'm using the Echo Crossfire line. It gets too tight and then melts to itself on the spool and then won't advance. What am I doing wrong? |

Thanks for the help. The head is marked on which direction to wind it. I've been splitting about 18 feet and halving it so it ends up with about 9' per string. I went and checked the manual to make sure the line I'm using is OK and they say it is. I may try a thinner line to see if that helps. I don't mind line consumption but I really can't stand stopping all the time to play with the line. When I was just using the trimmer at my place it didn't bother me so much. Now that I've been helping an uncle maintain some properties it gets old fast. I've learned that too much line is NG. Wrapping too tight is NG but sometimes regardless of how much tension I wrap the line with it seems to tighten on the spool. When that happens either the string will break inside the head or I get the line melt trouble on the spool. Maybe I should try a different head? |
Do you use a lot of blades? I had a friend that told me they used to sell a head that took short pieces of chainsaw chain or something like that. I think they are off the market now. |

Conversions for serrated plastic blades are still available. They come in a kit with extra parts for adapting to different makes. I'm puzzled about your trouble. They can be aggravating if the line gets stuck every couple of minutes, but mostly both of mine work fine if I halfway pay attention when I wind on new line. Hope you get it fixed, it's too hot to be jacking around with contankerous machinery. |
I'm on my second set of blades so far this summer. I'll probably use another two sets. Most of my problems breaking them is when I get lazy trimming around my chain link fence. Blades are about the same price as string so I'm OK with that amoount of usage. |

Try a different line. Good thread on this stuff HERE husky titanium trimmer line Edit: More accurately, it is the husqvarna TitaniumForce trimmer line. |

I have the exact same trimmer, and have had no problems whatsoever with it since I started running glassmaster square line. Great stuff. EDIT TO ADD: Echo makes loading the line pretty simple, so I doubt you're doing anything wrong. Just make sure to load the ends of the lines into the base holes in the spool, wind in the indicated direction on the spool face, and run each line out from opposing slots on the spool. If you are doing this then the problem is the line. |
