Students fall for potato PC scam

South London students are being warned of a scam in which they may end up parting with up to 200 quid of their hard-earned cash for nothing more than a laptop bag full of spuds.

Police say two scoundrels have targeted Southwark unis and colleges, claiming to have a laptop or other mouth-watering piece of kit for sale at a knock-down price. They show their intended victims a PC in a car boot but, after trousering the wonga, hand over a case packed with potatoes.

Det Supt Jane Corrigan told the BBC: "If it sounds too good to be true, then it generally is. You could be spending hundreds of pounds for a laptop case with very expensive potatoes inside."

The variety of potatoes involved in the outrage is not noted. King Edwards are not highly regarded for their computing power, but are suitable for both boiling and conversion into chips. Just as well, because spuds are most likely the only thing the Sarf London scammees will be eating until the next grant cheque arrives.

What kind of idiot buys a laptop from a guy off the street without even turning it on to see if it works??

They show you a real working laptop, then when you're distracted, they switch it out for potatos.

Buddy of mine and I were in the parking lot of a Target shoping center one night.  I don't recall why we were there.  I was probably buying something stupid there.  We were approached by a guy who offered to sell us some speakers.  The company he worked for ordered one set of them, they were sent two sets and the invoice had only one set listed.  That was his story anyway.  He was selling the "extra" set of $100.

My buddy, an audiophile, saw the box and whispered to me their MSRP was about $500.  He wanted to buy them.  He's not good with money (go figure ) and wanted to borrow it off me.  I had more than enough in my pocket at the moment, but I wasn't about to fall for what was likely a scam, a sting or a great chance to get mugged.  I told the guy I had to go into Target and we'd be back.

On the way to the store I told my buddy in no uncertain terms that I would not give him my money, whether he said he'd pay be back or not.  If he didn't have the cash that was his own look out.

We left the store, told the guy sorry but no deal and drove off.

The whole night I got to hear about what good speakers those were, what a good deal that was.  Jackass even brought some reveiws of them up on the web.  Next day we hung out again, with some other friends.  He started telling the story of what a fool I was when one of our other friends piped in.  Seems the guy selling, or those in the same scam, had been ripping off people all over San Diego the past few months.  They are selling normally empty speakers with bricks hot glued inside of them.
