I need 4 short ethernet cables.

Monoprice lists both 'patch' ethernet cables and 'straight' ethernet cables.

Which do I need for connecting computers to a switch?

Patch is "straight" cable technically, which is what you want. Cross over cables are for directly connecting switch to switch or pc to pc.

Same cable...1 to 1 pinout.

Yep.

Patch is the lingo for a short straight cable.

Not all switches and hubs in the field can handle auto MDIX.  Don't fall into that trap.

Yep.  The cost of cable plus the cost of two mod ends is only a tiny bit less than the cost of a completed cable from Monoprice.  Not worth the time or effort.  I only make my own when I need a custom length.  For standard length cables, Monoprice is the way to go.

Eh, patch cables are so cheap and are already certified, really no reason to buy a spool of cable, RJ45s and a crimper anymore unless you're cabling data centers and need exact lengths for neat cable management.

OP, did you get plenum or riser?

Using a straight cable where traditionally you would have a cross.  Just because you can doesn't mean you should.  Especially at the eleventh hour when x fails and y isn't as feature rich.  KISS.

My buddy pulled a spool of cat6 out of a dumpster b/c it was strait not cross over

Now I have 1/2 a roll of cat6 and an endless supply of ends @ work.

So my cost is Zero, it is just my time and effort. So I just build them at work.
Hell if I look busy people leave me alone, bonus.

I hard wired my TV to a switch in the attic this way.

Tyrannosaurs still walk the earth when it comes to networks.  I've see a 10bT hub still in service with a thinnet connector on it in the past 2 years.

You assume the OP has a gig switch. You know what happens when you assume?

Although he did buy fucking flat cables

If you use these for patching to a patch panel, 1 foot cables should be fine.

If you are connecting two devices together, you may have problems.  Minimum length between devices is 1 meter.  Sometimes it works.  Sometimes it doesn't.
