Has anybody here ever been successful at convincing a liberal that their way of thinking is flawed?  If so, what arguments have did you use to convince them?

I don't think that someone can actually be 'converted' from being a liberal.  It's more like they become enlightened.

I think it's easier if the liberal in question is of above average intelligence and is a liberal due to family cirumstances.  Grew up in a liberal household.

As the basid midset of a liberal is "feeeling" rather than "thinking",   it's not TOO hard to
get an intelligent person to start thinking and questioning the beliefs he or she has held and taken for granted.

I have a relative who works for George Soros....yes, the billionaire cocksucker who wants to bring America down to the level of universal shittyness that defines most of Europe.   She's
an intelligent girl from a New York City liberal family.    My brothers and I have caused her
to THINK about the issues enough that she's switched from automatic liberal to considered moderate.   She can't logically support some of her liberal biases now,  and she knows it,
and has said so , but her conversion is not yet complete.

I think it will be, before long.

Lots of liberal women become conservative after marriage and childbirth.

They realize that the really don't want their child to have a queer schoolteacher after all, and they decide that they would like to keep some more of what they earn rather that give it to some other woman to pay for her welfare kids.

For them, it is not logical arguement but protecting their family.

Never.  How can you "convert" someone with brain damage?

Don't make statements.

Just ask them questions about their statements that they can't answer and maybe they will start listening to themselves.

I converted my somewhat liberal, half-Brit roommate/friend by taking him to the range. His family is antigun and he used to be too, but this year he participated in the empty holster protest on campus and I even overheard him presenting a well-constructed argument for CCW with some liberal college students.

I don't try to convert liberals.  I argue with them in order to expose them to ideas and viewpoints they've shielded themselves from, and to challenge their erroneous beliefs. I'm pretty good at it, so my friends and family have learned not to talk politics around me.  If they say something dumb (such as my dad's girlfriend saying she would like to travel to Venezuela to see the wonderful democratic rule of Hugo Chavez in person)  I respond to remind her that he's made himself dictator-for-life and his price controls have emptied supermarkets of staples, hurting the poor he supposedly champions.

Excellent post on the topic, with the meat-and-bones highlighted in red.

My girlfriend is a partial communist.  Before we met, she was anti-gun, without knowing why.  Slowly but surely I've been chipping away at the red paint to get to the sensible, intelligent person underneath.

I don't brow-beat her, I just discuss her into the never-never land where a liberal has no more answers, or even anything other than the feeling that propelled them there.

It is a VERY long process, but when you take ANY little thing, at random, that they either agree with or have the brains to back and parallel it to some other issue that they've socialized with a ridiculous and romantic passion, then they start to think differently.

Also, about one in two thousand commies has any sort of conception of history.  So, if you're strong in that area, then you can show them the roots of what they think, the reasons why "it" won't work, and the eventual outcome of their theories.

Here is a small example.  Within the past couple of years she said that "they" (the government) should do something about the whole gas situation and develop an alternative energy source.  I asked her why that was the government's job.  No answer.  I told her that when people needed a better means of transportation other than the horse, the government didn't develop it.  At the same time, I told her nobody more than me wanted a cheap means of transportation, but the last thing I want is to get the fuck taxed out of me for a program that will, as is typical of anything government controlled, be dragged on for fifty years and develop nothing.

Sigh…

Lord knows I and many others have tried to enlighten the religiophobic, abortion and homosexual rights supporting, leftist principled liberals on this site, but they are a stubbornly ignorant lot.

If they watch "Survivor" point out that the group is supposed to work together for everything. Yet whenever I watch it, there is ~always~ 1 of the people that is the only one doing stuff, the others are always lazing around waiting for someone to do things for them.

i used this method to get my brother and a coworker to see that maybe "global warming" isn't as clear cut as some think it to be.

Aren't you Anti-Trapping?

I've posted a trapping thread before and you posted a response like "no blood for fur" or something totally uneducated and ANTI! It must be nice to live in your perfect little world!

I've helped convince the hippies i buy lunch from that concealed carry should be allowed on campus.
That has to count, right?

I can only do so much converting, since i'm not all that conservative myself.  I like to think of myself as liberally not-retarded, which makes it easier to talk with the conservative types than the libtard nutjobs.

converted a liberal on my ship a while back, same as the guys who posted above I stated to just ask questions that forced him to reason out his views in reality instead of the happy go lucky utopia where everyone gets everything they need and want.

I started by pointing out that Socialism is the most fair form of government ever developed, which I believe it is (on paper when everyone does their absolute best) then let him start to understand and explain the effects of holding back privileges from those who genuinely try to excel(wealth redistribution) and carrying the dead weight that is the Welfare reliant class in this country....

this goes on and on... gun control was a long and successful battle won using numbers, logic, and the amendments (with emphasis on what he thinks is the original intent) foreign policy was actually easy because he was intelligent and informed, not some tinfoil hat guy.   and so on and I can honestly say he is a full blown conservative who changed his affiliation from democrat to independent since none of the republicans seem to meet his conservative views, I am very proud of that one
