But it sounds like he had to work to pay for college. Fuck that! This chaps my ass to no end. I spent 4 years touring the many assholes of this planet as a US Marine to pay my way through community college, and hearing these kids whine about their tuition makes me want to start setting things on fire. |

But it sounds like he had to work to pay for college (earn the right to attend classes for free). Fuck that! No kidding; this guy worked his heart out and took the oportunity the University gave him and made the best of it... Most OWS, they want to be given everything for free and then get the corner office and the keys to the executive Gym from the moment they get their diploma in Haiku-Writing.
|
So what? He still worked for it. Better than those kids camping out in the parks demanding us taxpayers cough up thier tution for them. I can't afford to pay for the rest of my associate's degree right now, and they want me to pay for thier college education? No, thank you.

Except he got a degree in classics... Guess he really likes being a janitor... This is a good point. Props to him for working hard and getting a degree, but this is the same degree a lot of the Occutards probably have. He'll be stuck as a janitor and soon be joining their ranks rather than admonishing them for their laziness and setting himself apart as an example of what could be. |

But would rather hire this guy who worked and went to school to get that degree and is not afraid of work. Or some ass that wants every thing handed to them. |

Now that I think about it a little more, I bet laziness, rather than an Occutards choice of degree is what is holding them back. Hard worker with a shitty degree? Fine, welcome aboard. Lazy POS with a shitty degree = Occutard. |

Good on him for not asking for handouts though. |

So he is now a well read toilet scrubber.
Almost anything would have been better, except maybe women's studies. Good for him in using the opportunities given to him, but mostly its wasted time and effort pursuing a degree unless it directly influences his ability to make more money. I'd wager that this article gives him more portability in the workforce in finding a better job. |

Saw that this morning. The guy came to the country legally. Before he could attend classes he had to learn English. He worked his butt off and got the paper in something like 12 years. Guy is a rock star IMO.
Contrary to popular opinion, strong determination never fails to pay off - in more ways than one. |

I worked at a grocery store to obtain a MS in Liberal Arts and then applied for jobs where a degree wasn't required (cop/FF).
Should I be asking for loudly demanding a refund, or should I use the skills I developed in college to better my opportunities? I guess that depends on whether I vote (D) or (R).

I applaud the guy for paying his own way, just saying that Columbia offers far more marketable degrees than Classics. |

Quoted: I doubt that very seriously. Remember, he came from Yugoslovia, and I have never met an immigrant from a former Combloc nation that has any use for Socialism or it's misguided adherents here in the US, in fact quite the opposite. One Summer my great aunt from East Germany, quite loudly and pointedly, set me seriously straight about it back when I was going through my post-adolescent Mao/Che is great phase.Quoted: Quoted: Except he got a degree in classics... Quoted: Quoted: Except he got a degree in classics... No kidding––how much does that pay? ![]() The last time I checked my bank account.. plenty. Degrees are what you make of them. Obviously this guy has no imagination or hard-coded desire to do something significant. Otherwise he would hang a shingle and get busy designing and making a product or service for sale. IMO, people need to shut the fuck up and get busy. It's supposed to be a struggle to get to the top. It's supposed to be hard. You will fail and you will suffer for your dreams. That's the price of success though. So get busy. |

Classics is probably not the degree you think it is. ETA: Limited job opportunities, but it takes intelligence and a lot of hard work. |

I'll bet if they fired him he could be back to work in minutes at a different place. Janitorial services is actually a more complex job than most give credit for. And if your in charge of janitorial services, your job is just usually harder than a "white collar' job. Oh and if you fuck one little thing up you will hear about it over and over and over. I did 6 months as a janitor for a high school, my boss was a cool guy that pulled in 60k a year and managed a 15 person crew and kept a 100k sq/ft "house" in spotless working order. He also was in charge of keeping records for every piece of equipment and how long it had lasted and when it was expected to be replaced. He also was in charge of hiring all the contractor work that ever needed done. He was a busy guy. It is a job that if you do it right, everyone thinks you don't do anything, until you don't, then they hire you back at a 15% raise to get the smell of shit out of 30 classrooms. |
