Are looking for a new or gently used (1 or 2 year old) vehicle that will fit the wife, myself our teenage son & daughter and the little neapolitan mastiff who thinks he owns the house while still getting decent gas millage.

Would like to get something that gets better than 25-27mpg on the highway and the higher the better!!

Is this a pipe dream?? should we get a land yacht that sucks gas instead???

I always like to stop into a dealership, kick a few tires, then when the salesman pounces, ask, "So how much ammo will this thing carry?"

For the mileage you're looking at, you'll need a minivan. Maybe a crossover, but hell - what's the difference?

Have I inadvertantly logged onto MinivansandSUVs.com? Lots of thread today about the two.

Yesterday was Jeep trail rig day. Today, we're discussing the suspension articulation required to negotiate flower beds.

We traded in our Windstar for a Ford Freestyle (crossover) a couple of years ago (we got 40k miles on it).

It gets 25-27mpg on the highway fully loaded here on the East Coast (relatively level ground).  Around the city we get 17-19 mpg.

It can seat up to 6 and still has some cargo room behind the folddown 3rd seat.  I recommend getting one of the models with captain's chairs for the center row (they recline and you stop the 'Dad he's/she's hogging the seat' whines from the kids).

Think of it as a station wagon that sits a bit higher than normal.

IMHO crossovers don't have the room, nor the nice sliding doors, but they generally handle better and get better milage.
