Anyone ever play around on the dark web?  Is it worth installing the onion router, or is it all perverts and drug dealers?  If so where is a trusted place to get it?

NSA honeypot.

ETA: It is an interesting project, but if you observe the data entering the network and observe the exit points it is trivial to correlate who is doing what, regardless of the internal mechanisms designed to make that difficult.

There is fuckd up stuff on their. Not a place to play around on in my opinion.  Lots of perverts, drugs, guns, extremist bull shit, research, and hacker sites plus much more.

Not even close. Most of the content on TOR would be cause for the ban hammer here. It is.... unregulated.

I have never been able to wrap my head around the deep web.  What it is, how to use it, etc.?  I don't understand the concept, it's purpose, or make much sense of it at all.

I was told to stay away. Smart enough to listen.

I had to satisfy my curiosity.  I was warned there was illegal / inappropriate porn, hit-men and everything else you could imagine.  My experience is that it is an area of the web that is constantly being shut down, bad links, etc.  And it is SLOW!  My curiosity was satisfied quickly.  I lost interest, but I can say I've been there, done that!

Can I still have TOR downloaded on my computer and bounce between regular internet explorer or will the two conflict?

Doubtful.  All of the busts that made the headlines seem to involve something more than traffic analysis - drive by virus, correlation with freeweb activity, downloading illicit materials, shipping something to a physical address, etc.  Still, given the government's current position that visiting an illegal website is a felony, probably a good idea to stay off.

There isn't a whole lot there that's useful to anyone. And unless you like to see unspeakable acts being done to children, I'd just stay away.

The concept is great, the application of the concept is kind of worthless.

Arrest =/= evidence gathering.

Tor is what it is, and what it is happens to be a great lure for people that suddenly think they are invisible.

I would suspect that the TOR servers are mostly run by groups or governments that harvest data from them.

I try to be nice in GD. Yes, hidden services are not technically "on" (or "in") TOR. Care to explain that to the average bloke who's looking to try and buy dope or score pics of underage persons?

The ex girlfriend / revenge porn websites are entertaining. There always seems to be an abnormally high amount of Female Marines breaking uniform regulations on those sites lol.

And pay attention to the do's and don'ts while using it. If you're going to use Tor I would use it via a LiveUSB like Tails. And not my main PC. And at a public Wifi hotspot. Or not at all.

I have thought about running a Raspberry Pi Tor Relay for people behind restrictive governments and the like though.

FBI just shut down and arrested the owner of Silk Road 2.0 Tor Marketplace as well. Be careful on there.

I'm computer dumb and I got on it.  This was before the silk road arrests.

Like I said, I'm dumb.  I got on, at home, with my pesonal PC on my wifi.  Just opened it up and followed a guide I saw on the not deep web.

I was checking out the ex girlfriend/revenge porn/brazzers passwords stuff.

I walked out and came back into my dining room opposite of my kitchen.  I heard a voice say I can see a kitchen in the background.  My computer has a built in web cam.

So I shut it off and didn't get back on.  Now it has a virus and I've been scared to take it to geek squad (been sitting in the closet for at least a year) in case somebody did some ignorant shit through my shit without me knowing.  I didn't even know they could.

My advice, stay away, especially if you're a dumbass like me.

There are other options better than TOR if you're looking for anonymous browsing.  Google is your friend in finding them.

Correct tor is just a gateway to the deep web I figured since he was asking about TOR he was trying to access the deep web since that tends to be the use of the onion router.

Either your computer is haunted or you're a a schizophrenic. Only way your post is accurate.

Tons of misinformation and outright BS in this thread. If the darknet is "compromised" how come thousands of people use it daily to order and receive drugs without getting arrested?  How do the pedos get away with looking at their sick shit?  There have been a remarkably SMALL number of busts resulting from darknet activity.

I don't know what it is, that's the issue.  I remember hearing something about JAVA being left on or open or whatever and it could allow someone to access your shit, computer and wifi.  I dont' know the truth to it as I'm by no means a computer dude.  Maybe you could tell that by my post.

I know after perusing around the deep web my computer caught a virus; my anitvirus was expired and when I turned on my computer everything was messed up.  I couldn't search for mcafee or norton, etc etc.  I kept getting directed to places I wasn't wanting to go.  That kinda of hijacking thing that a virus will do, so I'm told.

Yes, I did download the brazzers free passes and stuff.  Guess that's where I caught it.

don't hook up to internet
turn on computer
pull off important files to a thumb drive
reformat and re-install everything

put thumb drive in computer with antivirus that was just updated and scan drive - get rid of any bad crap

The owner of SR2 had a hosatinag account for the site linked to a gmail acct that he accessed from an identifiable IP address. Moron.
