Okay, so law school's coming and I'm operating on a 2000 year model Sony Vaio. I want to upgrade to a tablet but I have to be able to download/view digital books, write like a notepad, sync my email and calendar, etc. I was thinking I'd also be upgrading my laptop as a home/portable computer and would like to have cross-compatability with the tablet. Okay, suggestions. Fire away! |

Thanks for the hp slate pix. I think I've found my huckelberry though. The Asus Eee 121 tablet 36GB Windows 7 OS Stylus for notetaking/touchscreen operation Bluetooth keyboard docking station that makes it look and function like a laptop but when tab is detatched, it becomes a stand-alone 12" Tablet weighing in at just around 2#. This may sound too big and bulky to some but $1000 for a multi-tasking super machine vs. $1000 for a new notebook and $400 for a tablet .... Well, the Asus wins hands-down. Now I just have to find one to buy! |

For a bit cheaper (not sure about the stylus for 'handwriting'), there are a slew of Android tablets coming out. Use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse with it and you have a very lightweight and portable solution for simple computing and communication.
I have an Acer Iconia A500 on order from Best Buy. Should be to me on Monday or Tuesday. I already have a BT mouse, but want to find a BT keyboard to use with it. Something small that folds up so I can take it with. |

Quoted: Updated: canceled the order for the Acer when I found out the Asus Transformer tablet will be available this coming Tuesday. I have the coin on hand, so I'm going to order the tablet and the keyboard dock. It will effectively be a tablet and a netbook. Any bluetooth tablet (which is almost all of them) will accept any bluetooth keyboard. I picked up the Acer Iconia A500 the other day. I'll be taking notes while I travel on location surveys. I'll be picking up a leather case that has a bluetooth keyboard inside. |

The keyboard base has a touchpad with buttons (multitouch capable) two USB host ports, a full size SD card reader and a battery the same size as the tablet. Uber versatile. Slap it together and you have a Honeycomb netbook. Pop the tablet off for more portability or convenience or whatever. Boomshakalaka! Two in one! I'm SO ordering one as soon as I can on Tuesday |

Well, the Asus tablet 'launched'... but every vendor that had some had VERY few. Searching around I found comment that NewEgg got all of 40 units. FORTY. Amazon had very few as well. No word on how many Best Buy had... the song was the same... anyone that got them sold out in minutes if not seconds.
I did find a site that allowed pre-order, so I went ahead and submitted one. They then sent an ETA of 5/13. Not tooooo bad. I like the tablet enough to wait a couple more weeks. If I get impatient, I can always swing over to BB and pick up an Acer. |

Reviews are excellent, price is good, great features, and good price. It's everything the Xoom is, and more, for a lot less money. And Asus isn't exactly a fly-by-night company, either. Only problem is availability is bad, demand is huge right now. Will probably take a couple weeks to get one. A month ago, there were 20 apps, steve jobs joked. (specific for honeycomb) Now there are over 100, and more are coming every day. Plus all the phone apps for Android actually SCALE on the tablet, unlike the iPad. HDMI out is nice- you could do presentations from it if you needed to. The attachable keyboard with extended battery is icing on the cake. |

I'm over on the XDA Developers forum for the Transformer, and reviews are good. There are still some niggles, but it seems Honeycomb is not quite matured yet. It's still really functional. A lot of people say the apps that Asus includes are really useful. I like that they have a cloud storage thing you can use for free for a year. I can think of a few uses for that. They also have an 'office' type app. Google did just release an official Google Docs app. Hopefully it will scale well to HC. I use it frequently. |
