Well they are addictive for one but you will still need a desk/lap top for some things.
I currently have the ipad2 and i also have android based tablet(samsung tab 4). I like the Ipad better since I have it linked to my mac desk top and my ipod touch and resently my apple tv. When you change or add something on one apple product, the change shows up on the other devices. With the android, I have compatability problem. Right now I use my Ipad for just about everything I do on the net, watch movies, gaming and music. It will also sync to my car's computer(ford explorer) and I can issue commands to perform functions such as sending and receiving texts along with playing my music. Think of the tablet as a stripped down desk top that is also and entertainment center in one. Also with ipad, when you go to your desk top any notes, calender events or added apps will sync/copy to the desk top automatically. good investment but buy one with as much memory as you can afford. |
| I have an ipad and use it daily, instant on and real 10 hour battery life are cool and it can do 80-90% of what a regular computer can do, more if you take the time to find specific apps for what you need. The stuff it doesnt do is irritating though, mainly Flash which makes some web pages weird and sometimes videos and pics dont appear. I am thinking of replacing it with a Surface pro because of this. |

| Tablets are great for convenience (light, long battery life, touch input, all day carry) when you need to do the 80% off stuff a regular computer normally does like web, videos, light spreadsheet/documents, and even lots of specialized applications nowadays. If you need to do the other 20% heavy spreadsheets, computer games, graphics work, etc, microsoft surface is a good, but more expensive option. |

My next tablet purchase will be a Win8/10 tablet, depending on when I get it. It will be a laptop replacement for my wife, who uses her laptop once every 2 months. It does function more like a laptop, although it is not a replacement, in many cases. For an average-to-light home user who wants Office and IE/Firefox/Chrome and some apps, it is probably fine.
I have a collegue who just purchased an ASUS Transformer. It has a detachable keyboard with a built in HDD. He likes it for common use. I consider this the best tablet/laptop replacement experience. Apple is still the "slickest" interface with the easiest usability, IMO. It is locked down, though, and I consider it a full tablet experience. Android isn't bad, if you're looking for a dedicated tablet experience that allows more control than Apple. My .02. Good luck! ETA: I scanned the OP. It helps to read.

Tablets = Toys.
If you need to do work, you will need a laptop/desktop. If you can do all of your work on a tablet, congratulations, you've reached your full potential, and can enjoy your career in retail. I use mine for surfing the net and watching videos. Since I get my content from Amazon (Prime member for years) the Fire HDX has been a much better fit for my needs than my iPad Air, which has sat idle for the last 6 months since I won the HDX in a raffle. Perhaps you should consider one of the following.
Asus T100 Asus T200 Asus T300 What makes those options nice is that it can be a Laptop/netbook when you need it to be or a tablet for fun. Plus it has a full blown version of Windows 8.1 and it will allow you to install your windows programs/apps. You can pick up a Asus T100 on ebay for around $200.

| I have three tablets issued to me for several of the contracts I work. I have a Galaxy Tab, an Ipad air, and a Surface. Those are listed in order of utility. If I could shoot the Surface, I would. The Galaxy Tab is my favorite by a long shot for ease of use. If I owned a tablet of my own, it would be a Galaxy Tab. |

I have an android tablet and a Chromebook and a Windows 8.1 machine. I use the Chromebook the most because it splits the difference between producing and consuming content. I just wish ChromeOS would allow desktop widgets like Android does.
ETA: I actually had an Android LAPTOP for a while, which was pretty cool, but without 4G it was not much use. |

You can get a stylus for any tablet.  It's not about the stylus itself, it's about the stylus having a tip that can handle the same capacitance (or whatever they call it) as the human finger.

my iphone got me into the apple ecosystem, so i went with ipad. my reasoning was that i have desktops at home and office, and very rarely needed the full capabilities of a laptop. now, i really like my ipad, but after a couple of years of use, i have to say that iOS just isn't quite adequate to bridge the gap. it will do in a pinch--you can get your data in there--but it just lacks the poop to act as a data tool on a regular basis.
if i had it to do all over again, i would absolutely go MS surface pro, or at least some form of full windows (like acer). unless you do a ton of keyboard productivity on the go, IMO a full OS tablet makes the laptop pretty much unnecessary. but like i said, that's just based on how i structure my setup. |
