So the 'what do you wear to the range' thread got me thinking... How many ARFcommers consider a trip to the range a good reason to get 'dressed up'? Then I wonder what percentage of folks even own any tacticool fashions at all? I'm not talking about a Glock t-shirt or a Bolt Face Logo cap. I'm talking 5.11 pants, German Anti-Terrorist Sneaker Boots from Adidas, that kind of shit. The closest I've ever come to tacticool was owning a few pairs of BDUs back in the late 80s/early 90s. I wore them backpacking and hunting, more for the pockets and freedom of movement allowed by their design than for the fashion statement. Poll inbound... |
|
I've got some 5.11 pants and some Woolrich Elite pants around that I wear on a somewhat regular basis. I didn't buy them because they were a "tactical" fashion statement though. I bought them because they worked well AND looked better than most of the pants that I owned at the time. I wear them pretty frequently. However, I doubt that anyone would look at me, the pants, and the rest of my attire and get the idea that I was "tactical". |
|
All I wear are 5.11 pants. I like the design and fit over most all other khaki cargo pants. Deep pockets, cell phone pocket and re-enforced knee's are the selling points to me. Besides that, my daily footwear are Danner battalion Boots. I wear my OD Larue Tactical cap everyday. Columbia or Mountain hardware jacket. Rei Fleece. To the average person, I probably look like someone who likes to go hiking. (Which I do.) No camo or boonie hats for me. |
I guess that having specific range clothes would make sense if all of your other stuff is really nice and would be wrecked if you actually did something active with it on. |
Ditto -- the most I have done is to ensure I don't wear heavy boots with big Vibram lug soles. Brass tends to get stuck in 'em.
|
So are mine. They also have holes in them to reduce drag. Very HSLD. ![]() In all seriousness, I don't wear "tacticool" clothing on a daily basis. The judge doesn't take kindly to counsel who show up to court in MARPAT. As for going shooting, I wear comfortable shoes, jeans and whatever shirt/jacket is appropriate for the weather. Oh yeah, I also wear earplugs, shooting glasses or sunglasses, and usually a hat too. None of them are especially tacticool though.

|
I've got a set of MARPAT, but only because a jarhead at Parris Island told me he could get me a complete set brand new for all of $40 and only an idiot would pass that up. My knowledge of "5.11" is that the two numbers come up constantly whenever the tacticool crowd starts yakking.
+1 The USMC gets babied, at least with the clothing. American Apparel MARPAT is friggin COMFORTABLE. Not to mention it's just plain stylin'. Best camo ever developed, IMO. |
i'll never forgfet my first National Police Pistol Championship in the late 80's. I was sooo worried about those competitors with all the tacticool gear that I thought, wow these guys must be good! Then when the niose and smoke cleared on the first stage and I was able to compare scores, I found that little ole me with blue jeans and a T-shirt had outshot most of those dudes with all that Tacticool gear |

First things first, if you have 5.11 (or like me... Royal Robbins) pants, you've gotta cut off that little gay strap they have on the back pocket. I mean seriously, what the hell is that for??? As for range trips, I usually wear some sort of tan or green RR pants because they're comfortable and have lots 'o pockets. However, you will not catch me in one of those vests they sell unless there's a damn good reason. I just can't seem to appreciate them unless I'm doing a PSD or something like that. For everyday wear, don't think it's going to happen. Of course, if I'm headed to the desert for class/ range/ hiking, I'm usually wearing desert digital if it's appropriate b/c where we go hiking tends to have a few people who you don't wanna run into (but it's fun to stalk and advise USBP!!). |
|
Khaki cargo pants (BDUs without the camo colors) - Most comfy pants I own Moontail hiking boots Long sleeve henley Sunglasses Houston Astros baseball hat (For tacitcool applications in hot weather, use underarmour underwear and replace henley with long sleeve underarmour shirt) Good for shooting, backpacking, yard work, lunch with the wife, reloading, loafing, etc.... Now if I could just convince my boss that it was appropraite attive for an engineering job.
|
Where can I get these?? |
|
It's always pretty warm in my neck of the woods. I got out of the Army in 1983. That ended my tactical clothes wearin' days! ![]() I just wear shorts. T-shirt hikers ( nasty mesquite thorns go right through sneekers) Ear plugs My prescription glasses W/poly carbonate lenses |
|
I wear Ralph Lauren Polos, Dockers, and Timberlands, primarily. I am a stealth preppie tacticool majj-ninja wannabe kinda guy. However, I have the coolest BDU pants for hiking, going to the range, and buming around in . . . they are so damn comfy! I am happy to state I have no 5.11 stuff at all. Steve |
I hated wearing the Marpat pants, I think the fabric is way too heavy and they are really hot. |
www.botachtactical.com/adgstabo.html They were first referenced here: http://jobrelatedstuff.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=690877&page=3 They look pretty comfortable, actually, but you're probably not profeshunal enuf to wear them. |
Incorrect, I am carrying a Glock FOTAY! |
|
Current 5.11 inventory: - pants (4) (tan, tan, navy, desert digital) - shorts (2) (tan, navy) - long sleeve shirts (2) - sport coat - denim jacket - boots - socks (came free with the boots) - workout T-shirt (UnderArmour knockoff) - boonie hat + 5 or 6 Wilderness belts Almost all bought from Botach, when on sale. For example, the denim jacket and the sport coat -- $19.95 apiece; the desert digital pants, $9.95. |
www.511tactical.com/ You are definitely not tacticool. |
Why diid you feel the need to tell us what kind of underwear you wear to the range? ![]() |
| i wear my regular clothes, which more often than not include some kind of combat boot (army got me hooked on em, plus theyre protective!) its usually jeans and a tshirt. just gotta grab my range vest (pretty conspicuous with the big red 'Texas Guns" logo on it) but its got my earplugs, glasses, speed loader and a gerber in it so its always got all the essential gear. |

I know that this will engender quite a few "What Effin' Business is it of Yours What Other Folks Wear to the Range" comments, but I don't get the dudes at my range all done up in really expensive kit (not just 5.11 clothes, but tac vests, pouches up the wazoo, etc.) to sit/stand at a bench and shoot their toys. I mean, I know the 350 lb+ dude is entitled to wear what he wants, but come on. Roleplaying is cute, but it's not why I go to the range. Maybe I'm just an asshole, but it annoys me the way airsofters annoy me. Not that I'd ever actually complain or bitch in reality. This is the internwebz. Made for venting. ETA: EMS pants (last for fuckin' ever), random long sleeve t-shirt, Merrill Mesa vents. What I wear every day. What I would wear if SHTF. If it's cold, North face Redpoint jacket. |
