In these uncertain times, would you take a job overseas if you had family and a house in the States?

I would.  And I did.  hella jack for IT professionals over here.

Yes, for me its called a "deployment."

If I got laid off and there was an offer making good $ overseas I'd go, for one hitch at least but I'd be trying to line up work back home for when the contract ran out.

Sir, FWIW when I served overseas my reasons for going had nothing to do with the economy, rather career advancement.  I'm US Navy civil service and took a job in Italy for four years the first time, and three for the second tour.  The life long memories of the adventures I shared with my family there were worth the hardship of moving, property manager, and everything else that goes with living outside of the US.  Do it, rent your home, and take your family, you won't regret it.  On the other hand I don't think I would want to take a job in someplace like Afganistan but anywhere in western europe would be at the top of my list.  HTH, 7zero1.

I've already spent a little over two years of life over here...  The plan is to go all John Gault at some point.

If I had a house and family?  No.

My current situation?  Hell yes.  Make some money, have some experiences (and pie with accents), possibly learn a new language, then come back.

I almost took a Ratheyon Antartic position, which would have been pretty cool (literally)

we may have something that would take me to Afganistan as a DOD contractor,  depending upon the time I'd have to spend, I'd go (I do have a daughter to consider)

I did. I spent about 8 months in Egypt in '91 on a contract. Great money and no taxes. No jobs here in the U.S. at the time. Wife and baby stayed home. I missed them and Egypt got old pretty fast, just like any other third world country. Did a short contract in England a few years later. Same thing. Once you get outside London or other major cities it becomes 2nd world (sometimes 3rd world) pretty fast.

Depends on location and $$. It can be O.K or bad. Unless it was Switzerland, it would never be "good" for me.

That's just me and my $.02 worth.

Not enough information presented.

You have to weigh in all the variables.  Relative risk vs. reward.

Every case is different, there is no right answer.

I'm talking about a management job in Afghanistan with a security contractor. The money is great, but the risk is up compared to my last slot in Iraq and the instability here at home is worrisome if I'm going to be punching out for any kind of medium to long term gig.

I have worked overseas quite a bit on a short term basis, as well as a few longer term jobs, so the nature of overseas work is no mystery to me. My question is more to do with taking one NOW.

Leave my guns at home...I don't know.  The money would have to be REALLY good.

Of course.  I hope there are plenty of contracting gigs still around when I retire in 3 years, 9 months, and 6 days.

As part of this job, I'd be in charge of the country armory.

If I got laid off....then I'd do it.....I enjoy being home with my family though, I've spent my time overseas and it's hard to put a price on being able to spend time with your wife and kids

My answer was 'yes' until I realized 1) you're referring to high-risk work, and 2) you'd have to leave your family behind.

Tough call. I'm glad I'm not in your shoes. How stable is YOUR work here?

Pretty stable, but this would be a promotion in my division with the same company, and set me up for further opportunities on my return.

I'm considering it.

I wouldn't want to be the person to push you towards something that risky, but you have a background in it and can probably deal with the stress.

The dealbreaker for me would be this: Can your family stand it? What does the wife want you to do?

There are two bars on the McMurdo base.  Beers are $1, shots are $2.  Mostly mid-range stuff available.  There are roughly 200 people that stay over the winter.  Everyone is rationed two cases of beer per week (to stretch the supply over the 10 months until resupply comes) but you can drink as much at the bars as you want.

I was told by a bartender that gross reciepts from a "mildly busy" Saturday night can be over $3000, not including tips.  If you work the math, even if everyone on the base is drinking, and they're all drinking liquor, that's 7 1/2 drinks per person.  Beers, it can be up to 15 per person to hit that figure.

Also, remember the shipment of condomns they got?

I talked to plenty of scientists while I was down there.  They know how to party.

I'm told that, married or not, everyone gets it on.  Plus, you need to pass a physical to get down there so there's no diseases to worry about.

I did it.  The job market tanked in WNC and I decided to get one more contract (#3) in while I can.
My wife would rather have me home (and I'd rather be there), but this year will buy me some
"down time" so I can find something to do when I get back.

3k a month? how does that equal 300k in 12 months? if both of you went thats only 72k a year.

I was assuming he meant $3K a week, there's no job I know of in Iraq that pays so little (to westerners anyway).
