Needing to tap 8-32 screw into stainless steel 304.

any recommendation of taps that don't break easy when hand tapping.

drill the holes out to #29 drill bit and have broken 2 Irwin taps.

Looking for a quality tap that doesn't break easy.

Though a lot may be in the technique you are using for taping.

Get 303 stainless as it machines better than 302/304.

This. If you snapped two, I suspect your technique needs review.

I usually go a 1/4 turn at a time and back out to clear the chip with plenty of Tap Ease or whatever you are using.

Long ago I used to make stainless panels for industrial scientific stuff.

It's your technique OP, we tapped dozens of holes in SS every day, and rarely broke a tap.

Regular taps will be fine if you don't break them.

This ...  As soon as you can get it to start start go until you feel it hitch just a bit and then turn it back a hair, and repeat doing a 1/4 turn back and forward every 1/4 turn or so. If you don't you will just snap off taps like no tomorrow. Taking it out fully isn't really needed unless you find the flutes are becoming clogged or the actual tap is. If you use cheap or dull taps with stainless you will find life kind of rough, but there is no issue tapping 304 SS.

Yeah, if you enjoy trying to pound out broken-off tap ends.

I'm more than familiar with that crap and it flummoxes me why people continue to try to use it.

Moly or go home.

...or buy the Harbor Freight drill press and drill crooked holes...

I tap 304, drill 304, machine 304, grind 304, beat on 304, bend heat and weld 304...take it slow, no more than a quarter turn at a time before backing up the tap to break the chips. Use a good cutting fluid and use a new quality tap. I have not broken a tap off in the last 20+ years tapping SS and I tap holes down to 4-40. It isn't a horse so don't be riding it.

I use a rapid tap fluid and go about a 1/4 turn and back off.

So it may be dull taps. Will get a couple more tomorrow and try again.

machinest and black smith here.
the best cutting fluid for any stainless is in your fridge, plain old cheap yellow mustard.
seriosly all of the wonderfluids out there cant hold a candle to yellow mustard for stainless steel taping.

trust me go try it it cuts the torque in 1/2  and you get no gauling or chip hang ups you can even use standard tool steel taps on stainless with mustard.

If you have a ream you may consider stepping the hole size up a hair too depending on what the screw is for.

Because the sulfur compounds in mustard (or horseradish, wasabi) promote chip breakage.  Heavily sulfurated cutting oil is even better.

The more it stinks, the better it works.

What if you don't like mustard?  Will ketchup do?

Some stainless is pretty gummy.  What feed rate?  Which fluid are you using?  I always have liked OSG exo taps.

Ridgid dark threading oil works well, Castrol Moly Dee is the industry standard.  OSG spiral point tap for a thru hole, spiral flute otherwise.

Those Irwins are carbon steel, you want hss.  And screw hand tapping, chuck it in a cordless drill.  Focus on the alignment and let the drill do the work.
