Does anyone have recommendations on what to use to construct a target gong?  I realize it's metal but I was curious about the thickness and specific materials.  Also what sort of place would see such materials, I suppose scrap metal yards...

Thanks,
Jeff

hard to get the right steel plate nowadays, as most of it is being diverted overseas for use in armor.

We use 4" thick plates at the gun range and they are getting ate up fast

Will depend on what you are shooting it with.

That's a fine point.  Let's assume primarily 5.56 and 7.62x51.

I think the two I have are something like 550 steel?  Don't have the slightest idea what that means but the only rounds I have that will slightly dimple them are 7mm magnum.  .308 and 5.56 don't even touch it.  They are about 1/2" or so thick and have torch cut holes that I string rope through and hang from old realtor signs.  They are about 1 foot square and I would say way about 25 to 30 lbs apiece.

We used 1/2" to 1" plate and it holds up fine.

Buy the right type

I used 1/2" AR Plate.  So far it's holding up well with M193 and SS109.
