I am thinking of picking one up here locally. It is a .357 model 66 with a 6 inch barrel. Any opinions on these guns? I have never owned a revolver or a Taurus. Thanks for any feedback

ETA it is $250

I bought my wife a 2" CIA 650 in .357, and it runs pretty well.  The first one didn't, but I traded it back to the shop for a replacement, and this one has zero problems.

I know back when the local PD's carried wheelguns lots of cops carried Tauruses (Tauri? ), but that was 15 years ago.

IIRC there were some recent QC issues with their polymer autos, but their revolvers are (or were) solid.

I've had one of their 44 magnums for over 10 years now. Great gun! No issues whatsoever. They copied S&W perfectly.

I had a 66.

I got rid of it...I just wasn't that impressed with it.

$250 is about the going rate for one.

personally, i'd pass on just about ANYTHING taurus...not worth my time, money, or 'risk'

YMMV

PS: lots of taurus users are satisfied with thier products though

Not pleased with my Taurus PT11pro.  In fact, going to get rid of it, probably as soon as tomorrow.  I've given it plenty of chances...paid close attention to my grip, trigger pull, anticipating recoil, etc. etc.... the dang thing still shoots low and left regardless.  Have zero issues with my other firearms.  Just that one doesn't seem to make the grade for me.   Final verdict:  I cannot trust that weapon to protect my life or the lives of those I love.

You may have a different experience, and I truly hope you do.  I gave it a shot (pun intended? ), and I really wish the thing would shoot more accurately.  However, given that it shoots low and left, coupled with an insanely long trigger pull, I just assume trade it in on something else.

Good luck if you go get a revolver.  No clue how they hold up, but I'd certainly like to know.  I won't count Taurus out of the fight just based off of one soured experience, but I'll be damn sure to get some solid reviews and (more) extensive range time with another pistol of theirs that I may be interested in buying.

I own a Taurus 85 .38.

I replaced the mainspring to lower trigger pull and gave it to the wife.

Not my most accurate pistol, but it has never jammed

ETA:

I have owned it nearly 20 years.

I recently purchased a PT111 Millenium Pro, and have about 300 rds through it without a hiccup.

A lot of folks will bash Taurus....I've had a few of their guns and never had a single problem with any of them.

I have a 5 shot 38 snubby I like it.

Bought a Taurus 85 snubbie a while ago. The thing would lock up every 2 - 3 shots. I disassembled it and found out that the machining of the internals were not that great. The transfer bar and the trigger mechanism was locking up because of the rough edges on it. A few minutes with a dremel tool smoothing out the burrs took care of the problem. It now has a sweet trigger and shoots like a dream.

I had a 24/7 in .45acp... it was comfortable, but never reliable enough that I wanted to carry it in a pinch. I replaced it with a 627 Tracker revolver in .357. I luuuurve it.

Meh, their ok if you like middle of the road revolvers. S&W's are better and they will always hold value.

I used to have a 605. (2in .357)

No problems. Wish I still had it.

I owned 2 taurus revolvers.  Key word >OWNED< pass on anything from Taurus.  Shit quality steel is what lead to breakage in the cylinder mechanism in one and the other was one of my early not very well thought out purchases.  A .38 snubby which I just gew to hate the more and more I shot it.

I had a Taurus Model 66 with 4" bbl.  I used it on a trade and really regret it.  I liked it a lot.

This is exactly what my wife's was doing.  I was a little uncomfortable taking it apart and diddling with the innards, so I let Taurus do that and got another one as a replacement (actually, it was the next one in the SN sequence, but did/does not have that problem at all).

Pharmacist buddy had a .22 WMR Tracker. The cylinder would bind between shots. He got rid of that POS. Friends don't let friends buy Taurus.

I have a stainless model 66 with a 4 inch barrel.  It is a great pistol.  Never had any issues with it after many hundreds of full power .357 mag loads.  My dad has a S&W model 19 .357 and the trigger on my model 66 is just as good if not better than his model 19.  I say go for it, taurus makes a good product, they just have a bad record from way back when they made some poor firearms.

I have a model 689 and love it.  With .38 target load wadcutters, it's just one ragged hole at 25 yds.  Bought it new and nary a problem in over 10 years.

I had a taurus .357 with a vent rib.  I scored higher than a guy at the range with a smith, he was pissed because he had given me so much crap for buying it.  After about 1000 rounds it became out of time or something and I lead splattered a guy beside me at the shooting range.  Sold it right after that...

Not to hijack the thread, but I admittedly know less about revolvers than semis. I only own a Taurus 85 snubbie. How does Taurus fit into the revolver hierarchy? S&W, Ruger, Taurus, then Rossi???
1/13/2009 8:47:33 PM EDT
[#28]
buy it.  At that price it's a deal

Lot's of people think they are crap but mine has shot well.

1.  Colt (S&W may have been higher quality during the period 1940-1990 but Colts are more collectible and cost more)
2.  S&W
3.  Ruger
4.  Taurus
5.  Charter Arms
6.  Others

I have a 7 shot tracker that shoots good. Wish the trigger was a little nicer. Other than that it's been good. Not S&W quality but it will last longer than me.

I bought my wife a small 38 it had pearl grips on it, it shot ok, not real smooth, and  when the pearl grips cracked on it after less than 250 rounds, I called Taurus and they refused to  send me a new pair. They did say they would sell me a pair for $80 though. They said  pearl grips were not covered by the warranty.

The price looks good, if it's good condition I'd go with it. I had one until a month ago, only sold it because I got a 608(Taurus 8 shot .357). Accuracy with my 66 was as good as I could want in a revolver.
1/14/2009 7:09:36 AM EDT
[#36]
The price seems fair enough but I personally would avoid Taurus.  Then again for 250 bucks you're not risking much.

I've got a hardon for S&W though.  Which is odd because my .357(pistol pack) and .44 are both DAN Wessons.

Taurus revolvers aren't spectacular in the quality department. I have a model 85 that is almost 30 years old and it still works...but it hasn't been fired very much over that time. I'd rather have a Ruger revolver and I would much rather have a S&W revolver...but if it's just a range toy and you aren't using it for serious social purposes it doesn't matter as much.

Ask yourself these questions:

Do any police or military units use Taurus products? Does anyone build race or combat guns off Taurus frames?

 There you go.

My FIL has a Taurus 357 and it seems to work just fine.  Always goes bang and reasonably accurate.  What else do you want?

SA trigger pull is not bad.  DA is horrible, IMO, but I've never fired a DA that wasn't.

I know two people with Taurus .357 snubbies.  Both of them carry them as BUG all the time and they have never had any problems.  The one guy sent his hammerless back to the factory for them to do trigger work on it for something like $60.  He brings it out with him to the range and its a good gun overall.

I have a fun little .17 HMR snubbie that's pretty awesome too.

I have a Model 85, 38 special snubnose. I bought it used for $100.00. It has had a lot of use, but it has never jammed or had any sort of problems.

The Taurus is my CCW. The only drawback is the weight. It is a little bit heavy. But, the weight is a good thing, too, since I don't feel the recoil even firing +P.

Personally, I like the S&W Model 60 (J Frame) target revolver better... but it costs more than the 66.

I recently got one of these, have been putting it through its paces, and LOVE IT!

Taurus Judge .45 LC/.410 3" shotshell

When it's not at the range it lives in my nightstand, loaded with five 3" magnum .410 000 buck shotshells. That's FIVE 72 gr lead pellets at over 800 fps at 12 feet. Times five...

LIVE FREE OR DIE!

I have had a 4" stainless Taurus 66 since 1989. This gun has tens of thousands of rounds through it and is still really accurate and fun to shoot. It shoots equally well with factory ammo and my own reloads.

I have never had any trouble with Taurus firearms and you would do well to buy one

We're talking handguns.

I own a Ruger revolver and I would own more, but the semis... not so much. And Taurus, well, I like The Judge but not a lot more.
