I finally picked up another Neo. I've named him Terminus and thus far he has been great!

These two are from when we first picked him up.

He has already gotten much larger and won't be a lap dog for long.

Best of luck. There are only a couple of good reasons to want one IMO.

I actually spoke with a forum member about them at length a couple of years ago. It was about 1.5 hours of the negative aspects and about 10-15 minutes of the positive.

I'm very happy to have found a breeder that strives to breed for health followed by the desire to work while still being in the standard. I was astonished at how many Neos will roll over and let you rub their chests when I went to a dog show last year. There is no way I would own one that did that for every tom dick and harry.

My last Neo was 11mo when we picked her up. She was too timid most likely from lack of socialization at an early age. She was a hard dog though. This one is just as hard. I'm having a difficult time working the down since he just doesn't want to be put in that position at all. He'll sit all day, stay for a good while vs. the amount of work I've put into it, but he doesn't like the idea of laying down for me yet.

ETA: Don't let her know about the smell. These things wreak worse than any dog I've ever come across. They're just smelly beasts.

I dont know about Neo's but I have had (and currently have) Dogue De Bordeaux's and have had zero problems with kids.  In fact, if anything they are incredibly patient, protective and gentle with them.
Temperment is key.  We sought out breeders who breed quality dogs and did our homework

Agreed. My last dog was taken to the park to socialize her and so she could get over being timid. There was one little girl that loved the dog and pulled on her face all the time.

+1 to the breeding for sure. As I have mentioned in other threads a lot of Neos these days will roll over on their backs for anyone. My breeder breeds for more of a working temperament but that's not the norm any more. Of all the dogs in her litter there was only one that I would have never wanted if I had children and even that dog would have been the perfect farm dog for an older couple with no pets.

You would be wise to educate not only a child, but everyone you come into contact with regarding how to behave around working type dogs though. Petting them under the chin after asking if it's OK, not getting in their face etc. It's common sense stuff, but it's really gone by the way side in my lifetime IMO. People just don't think they have to worry about a dog biting them these days for some reason.

I agree completely and this is awesome to here. Any chance you'd mind telling me your breeder and how much your girl costed? I plan to be living on some land in the next five years and would like a dog that can nut up and protect my wife and son when i''m not there.

I need to get some updated pics, but he is growing pretty well so far. Last week he weighed almost 45lbs. He sure doesn't look like it though as he is really dense. I think he'll eat me out of house and home before he is done as he's eating close to 6 cups of quality food per day right now.

We are doing training classes every Sunday and I'm pleased with how well he is progressing. In a few short moths he is doing nearly as well as our last dog after a couple of years.

Thanks. He is already over twice the size he was in the first pic and no sign of slowing down of course. He is pretty well behaved so far, but we have been working with him very regularly on that.
