Fuck that, wouldn't work for me. We go to the outer banks twice a year, about a 400 mile 1 way trip. We don't stop for fuel once and we don't want to add onto our 6 hour trip. Time=money. When electric distance gets greater between charges I'd consider it but not what they are currently.

Quoted: So approximate downtime charging for this leg of the trig is 105 minutes charging, plus say another 20 minutes added by detours and having to park/etc... 2 hours added for what distance? View Quote We drove 611 miles today and supercharged 3 times.. Added about 2ish hours to the trip but we could have been gone sooner if we’d left when it said we could continue but we weren’t back at the car yet for 2 of the 3 stops ETA: cost was 52.08 to go 611 miles. So 0.085ish cents per mile |

You do you, OP. Every gas pump you're not at is more more free pump in case I need to spend 4 minutes putting 500 miles of range into my car
In all seriousness, enjoy the trip. |

And therein lies the problem with "self driving" Too many morons in this country assume that an automated system of that complexity is incapable of making an error or shutting down, so they begin treating the driving function as something in which they no longer have to participate. After all, the car is doing it now, all by itself. I have seen idiots READING A BOOK while the vehicle is "driving itself". Others are watching a movie on their phone, based on accident reports I have read. Self-driving is a DISASTER in the making for your average driver, due to them obviating their ultimate responsibility as the legal driver of the vehicle. |

View Quote Self-driving is great when you have nice smooth roads and brightly painted lines. But it generally won't work on our roads, because we have too many variable conditions. This time of year, it's potholes and frost heaves. Whether self-driving or not, a car that sticks to the normal travel lane is in for some broken suspension parts and flat tires. Driving on MT roads in the spring means keeping an eye out for those suspension eaters, and being able to drive around them. This frequently means drifting into the opposite lane or over the fog line (which is generally non-existent anyways, since it's covered with sand, gravel, or dirty snow). And if the road travels along the side of a mountain or river canyon (which is commonly the case around here), then there are frequently rocks that have fallen onto the road. (And not just forest service roads - this happens on the major interstate highway as well). |

Wait, do they have bathrooms at most of the supercharging stops? Open 24hrs?

I don't see the point, but whatever floats your boat.
I'm familiar with 200 mile stops, because that's about what I'm comfortable doing in my Jeep. (It'll go 300-ish if it's not towing, but my fuel gauge is calibrated wrong and 200 is about when it shows empty. Came that way from the factory and I forgot to fix it the one time I dropped the tank. ) My Accord goes 500 comfortably, which is generally longer than my Bladder will handle, and almost always I want to stop for gas anyway, since it is generally cheaper in Rural AZ than in any of the neighboring states. And the Accord basically steers itself if I want it to. But I'm mainly posting to LOL at your license plate. |

So about the same cost. The tesla is a much nicer car than my suby but the suby does its job well. I would have a tesla if it cost me 21k out the door like my suby did. We would be fine with an ev, I have my truck, my car and the wifes car. So we would always have an ice car for road trips but ev for local. |

View Quote Supercharging costs have certainly went up over the last year or so…used to cost me half as much on average…you can still catch lower rates depending on the location and time of day Cost wise it’s a wash compared to an efficient gas vehicle to drive it long distances Where it really shines is commuting and charging at home cost wise…I pay .13 cents per kWh at home |

Thanks for this thread. My Tesla has not yet been taken out for a long range spin, but I'd like to do that as it's super comfy to drive. So far I've used the ICE Jeep Grand Cherokee for long road trips, but I'm getting the hankering to try an EV road trip.

Is my math off?
You are driving an electric vehicle that is getting roughly 35 mpg if gas were 3bucks a gallon?…Why? It’s late and I did that math in my head, so forgive me if wrong. |
