Is Texas considered to be "Southern" in terms of culture? We did side with the Confederacy but I've always viewed Texas as being unique, a culture unto itself. Do other southerners consider Texans southerners? |
It is. I'm not trying to be an ass about it, but, There is a fierce stateism thing down here. It's more about a rebellion being put down without a followup of fellowship than anything I think. |
I'm not sure if that's true, wasn't Hawaii a country or rather an independent Kingdom? You Hawiians may want to correct me on this... |
When I moved down here and started college back in 1993, I learned that Texas History was a required course. I thought WTH? Who cares? Why is this a requirement? After I took the course, I was greatly enlightened and ended up pursuing a lot more knowledge about this Great State. The history of Texas is an extremely fascinating thing as well as being overly impressive. I know where the overwhelming pride comes from now. |

Texas, where even Chevrolet bowtie emblems sport the state flag. Don't mess with Texas, because, well just don't mess with it! I've been in TX for two months working and I've seen more Texas pride stuff on houses, in gardens, on vehicles, all over the place I am working at. Nowhere else in the country, and I mean nowhere, does any other state have that much pride in itself. |
Wrong. Ever hear of the California Republic? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Republic |
|
I wasn't born in Texas, but I live here and I love it here. It's southern in its own special way. It's analogous to saying that Louisiana is a state in the U.S., but we all know it's a unique state. So yes, Texas is southern, but in a special way. Although I am concerned about Texas losing it's Texan feel. I don't want this state turning liberal, but with all the influx of immigrants, there's a growing number of Dems. |
And I gotta say...I love being in TX. I loved being a Tarheel, and, still hold my love for NC inside me, but, for some reason, that state and it's people are ok with getting assimilated. I'm not a native Texan, but, ever since I crossed the state line, I've felt at home here. It's not perfect, but, I can't imagine living anywhere else. |
Pffft! Wannabes. They didn't even have to fight for it and they never even ratified a constitution.
|
Dude, do you REALLY want to hold up Kali as ANY example of what a great state is?
|
|
So...... How long do I have to live here before I'm considered Texan? I long ago renounced my citizenship as a New Yorker, and much more recently as a Miamian, so I reckon I'm a bit of an illegal alien from up north! Where's the nearest Texas immigration office at? I want to sign up! |
I think it's more a spirit thing than anything. I pretty much decided it when I crossed the state line when I PCS'd from Ft Detrick to Ft Hood. Married a redhead from McAllen, so maybe I get in by marriage ![]() Long as you are willing to slap that Texan label on, we'll have yah :) |

A few words from a transplanted Yankee having lived in 18 states of the Union and 4 other countrys I by the grace of God, call my self a TEXAN. Texas is the only place i have ever and to this day call HOME. What is a Texan? Proud, Free, Humble, Flexible, God Fearing, Friendly, Family First, Neighbors second and Strangers, never met one. Patriotic, Willing to offer Life and Liberty to Defend the Defenseless, Hearty and do not know the meaning of BACKUP. That is a By God TEXAN. They are southerners, southwesternser, loggers, cattle ranchers, mathmaticians, scientests, and even a few interior designers. Texans are fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters. THEY are a classifacation all by themselves and like NO ONE<> ANYWHERE They will take no from no man, greif from no one and never tell a TEXAN it cant be done. I proudly stand and proudly say, I am a Texan until Judgement Day To all of Texas I say thank you for giving me a home like no other and I promise to return as soon as i am able. Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas |

My great-great-great grandfather came here from Ireland by way of Alabama in the early 1820's. I have a copy of the original Spanish land grant. Old maps of Texas show Dunn's Fort, which he built as an Indian Fort to protect folks during Apache raids. Literally, Davy Crockett and Co. slept there on their way to the Alamo. A Texas State Historical Marker was erected on the site several years ago. We have visited the old family cemetery where he and my great-great-great grandmother and other ancestors are buried. The town of Wheelock, outside of College Station, has a cemetery on land donated by his son, my great-great grandfather. Memorial Day weekend every year all the families who have descended from the Wheelock area pioneers get together at the cemetery for food, visiting, and cleaning the old headstones. |

WOO-HOO! I didn't see that sign! Can I get a rain check on the rifle? What kind is it? |
Any 7.62 variety, since everyone knows that a .223 won't kill TX deer. |
|
Texas is as much a state of mind as it is a physical place. We love you TN boys. We don't forget those who stood with us. Amen! If it hadn't been for a whole bunch of Tennessee boys we would still be speaking Spanish. The way things are going now we may need your help again. |
Now that is just plain cool. |

I've been in Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio. It's a great state. Far better than NY. NY sucks. It's one of the worst states in the Union. Everything gets shittier and more dismal every year. this state is going to Hell in a handbasket which explains why this state's population is declining more and more every year. Every onw who has common sense and the ability is moving south, while all the left wing lunatic jackasses that are fucking the rest of us keep up with their bullshit legislature and socialism. TX is a beautiful state and the people are nice for the most part. |
Now change that nasty-ass NY thing to TX and your in the club. |

home.sw.rr.com/willum/texas_sign.jpg Correct me if I'm wrong but that looks like the New Mexico/Texas border, and if I understand Texas law correctly I would actually have to leave my pistol behind(open carry) in the Great State of New Mexico.
