| I am thinking about retiring next year from the military and am looking for a follow on career. Does anyone have any helpful advice about becoming a Texas DPS Trooper? |
|
DPS actually has a rather handy recruiting website:
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/trainingacademy/recruiting/traineelinks.htm |
| Going to have to be more specific about your question. Basically Troopers do traffic, in more rural counties they do traffic and work crashes. Even more rural than that they do traffic, work wrecks and take calls. They also have other divisions; auto theft, narcotics, investigations, commercial motor vehicle, aviation etc etc. |

Basically looking to hear if anyone had experience with them. To see if I should spend my energy trying to apply. If the morale was poor or the leadership had issues is what I was asking about.
I agree the website is nice but I was asking for the non-official point of view. Thanks to those who responded. |
| In my area which is semi-rural the Troopers are fine, several of them I talk to everyday. Just about everyone I talked to likes DPS and doesn't really have anything negative to say. Two of the DPS offices around here are on 12 hours shifts, 2 weeks of days then 2 weeks of nights. Another office is on straight 8s with the same days off. Find out what area you might like to go to then talk to the line personnel and see what they have to say. |
