How do I go about covering my paneling walls with joint compound? I've seen it done, and I want to do it, I just dont know how. What method do I use when applying it , should I go in like a semi circle?  Please gimme some pointers here home improvement guru's.

Ok, (fyi, I own a remodeling company linky) you can apply it however you want to, but I would recommend against doing it unless your walls are free of flex.  Push on the panels- do they flex easy?  If so, you are going to have some seriously crappy crumbling texture if anything presses against them (unless you use truck spray on bed liner ).

That concern aside, do it however you want to.  Texture is texture.  If the walls are sound, the mud doesn't care whether they are made of gypsum or wood.

1. Tear down the paneling

2. Make wall repairs as necessary.

3. Paint.

4. Stop being a cheap redneck jackass.

J/k

Seriously, why would you do that, it's alot of work.

I did it on a small room once. It turned out ok. I redid the room a few years later and ripped it all out. I should have done it right the first time.

Its a bunch of work to tear down the paneling and hang drywall, then I'd have the outlets to move outward, the doorframe, and windows would also have to be brought out 1/2" if I did that. The walls are very, very ridgid; not flimsy at all. The paneling must be pretty thick.

All that being said, can anyone give me some pointers ?

Mix the compound properly.  Too wet and it will run, too dry and it won't stick.  Mix up small batches and do one wall at a time so it doesn't dry out as you progress.  Other than that, it's pretty simple.
