A little story about this one. This has always been one of my favorite songs after hearing it as a 11/12 year old kid. When YouTube first starting getting big, I remember finding this song on there and one of the folks in the comments was David "Doc" Robinson. I had always wondered what instrument was used to play the opening notes to the song so I sent Doc an email to ask. He responded, "Oh yes, those magical notes! They were played using a Wurlitzer electric piano." I thought it was pretty cool that he answered my email. Wish I still had it. Anyways, to the song:

That's a nice selection set, @Anastasios!
Let me add another foreign group. It's a song I heard years ago on a TV show used during a ridiculous shoot out, but it does show the universality of people understanding music!! Thành Mái - Tóc Mai S?i V?n S?i Dài (Long, Uneven Hair) There was a whole slew bands in Asia recorded from the early '70s until political machinations beyond their control crushed them into oblivion. that were pretty good. From their standpoint, they could work at a club on an American base, but as Led Zeppelin isn't going to be touring there any time soon, these bands would also be in a high demand until political winds changed direction and would crush them into oblivion. Speaking of the universality of music, here's a Zappa song, from 1969's Hot Rats, that was done using classical Chinese music structures, you know the kind of music that sounds like someone's torturing a bag of cats? Yeah, that stuff: Frank Zappa - Peaches en Regalia - original 1969 mix |

Yes, the Tubes!! A quintessential San Francisco group!!! But, before some of you claim moral superiority, almost half of these guys came from Arizona!!!! So, put that in your pipe and smoke it.
That leads us to focus on Bill Spooner, aka Sputnik. He writes really great songs. Tubes - White Punks On Dope (1977 R0X M1X) Don't Touch Me There Up From The Deep The Tubes Slipped My Disco with Lyrics in Description |

The Tubes- Mondo Bondage The Tubes Pimp with Lyrics in Description Cathy's Clone This next song came out in the early '80s, but it was Spooner's last album with the group before he moved back to Arizona where to this day he still plays in a band with his sons. It's one of those songs that should be heard even though it's still in a radio friendly format: The Tubes - Don't Want to Wait Anymore (Official Music Video) |

Originally Posted By Makarov: A '70s kind of love is different from normal love View Quote At some point in growing up, you start thinking of the World outside of yourself, or put another way, you start thinking of yourself in the World instead of you as the center of the World. All of those experiences and thoughts we had stick with us as it is what we taught ourselves. We, all of us, also had more good times than bad times, normally, growing up as Americans. I've always seen it as people trying to get back to the more or less carefree times of their youth when the parties were better, fast food was better, music was better, comedians were funnier etc, etc. But if you want to talk specifically about the music, the one huge difference between the '70s to the decades since til now, it was the lack of being able to digitally fix errors. You were good, or you sucked. That was it. These days, you can suck, and with the data stream running through a fast enough processor, you can even perform live. (When you see stacks of amps and speakers in the background at arena shows, those are props! The sound is processed through the arena's sound system.) Essentially, the '70s was the last decade of popular music being rebellious. From the '80s on, it's all about corporatism, even hip hop is corporate and formulaic. That is correct: lyrics suggesting killing the police and each other are part of the formula for record sales. There are plenty of musicians and bands out there, but even with all the web sites that are available to upload music onto, there are even less major acts now than before. That I can't explain. ETA: yup, fixing more typing errors. I should look into a typing chimpanzee. Really can't be any worse than what I do. |

One of us already posted "Papa was a Rolling Stone" by the Temptations. Good work!!
A lot of those stylized groups were actually the logical end of the "doo wop" era: 4 or more harmonic voices with one lead usually higher pitched selling the narrative with the secondary voices playing the part of the Chorus in classical Greek theater. The Temptations, the O'Jays, there were a number of really talented groups out there. As the music industry sought to stratify itself for more efficient record sales, everybody got pigeon holed. You were either this kind of music, or that kind of music. Groups like the Temptations become R and B music. R and B was transformed into single act and duo act singers doing ballads. Disco killed R and B music. Eddie Kendricks left Motown, and therefore left the Temptations. He was tired of being stifled creatively. He had some success on his own, but eventually, with the decline of Motown, he did rejoin the Temptations in the '80s. Here's a couple of his songs: Keep On Truckin' Failed To Load Title Here's what the remainder of the Temptations thought of him when he left: Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You Are) |

Now for the Piece de resistance!!!
I was born in San Francisco before there was a Castro Street District. In fact, the area had a different name. I think it was Empire Valley when I was a little kid, maybe Excelsior Valley. I remember it started with an 'E.' Anyway, by the '70s, we had jokes about how to deal with it all. Por ejemplo, "what do you do if you drop your wallet on Castro Street?" "Kick it down to Van Ness before bending over to pick it up!" It's about 8 or 9 blocks away in the Mission, so you would actually be safe doing that - at that specific moment in time. Those days are over!! But, I digress. LA was always more problematic in this regard. I remember in the 2nd grade we would talk about the stories that came up North out of LA about kidnapping, raping, killing young boys and were always making pledges to each other how we had each others backs. In truth, it didn't work out that way. I was riding bikes with a fellow 2nd grader in a park being developed when two lesbians threw something the size of a bowling ball at me knocking me off my bike. I got back on my feet and defended myself as best I could, but they were much larger people and eventually knocked be back to the ground where they beat the shit out of me. I could see my friend still on his bike not knowing what to do. Next meeting of us 2nd graders, we talked weapons!!!! This next song is by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, and I'm willing to bet that none of you have ever heard it before!!!! The underground radio stations played it, but not the corporate ones to my knowledge. It brought a sense of vindication. Please to enjoy: Ain't Nobody Straight In L.A. ETA; fixed more spelling mistakes. |

Aegian Sea
Aphrodite's Child - Aegian Sea (video) I saw the souls I saw the martyrs I heard them crying I heard them shouting They were dressed in white they've been told to wait The sun was black the moon was red the stars were falling the earth was trembling And then a crowd impossible to number Dressed in white carrying palms shouted amid the hotless sun the lightless moon the windless earth the colourless sky ... They'll no more suffer from hunger they'll no more suffer from thirst They'll no more suffer from hunger they'll no more suffer from thirst They'll no more suffer from hunger they'll no more suffer from thirst |

Richard Branson launched Virgin Records off this recording. It was also used for the sound track of the movie, "The Exorcist." That's marketing!!! What we knew at this time was that Michael Oldfield was 19 when the record came out, so he probably started composing it at 16 or 17. As mere kids ourselves, we were suitably impressed. (I did find an 16 minute version and an 8 minute version that edit some movements, but I didn't book mark them like a smart guy would've done.) Failed To Load Title |

Let's revisit Gran Funk Railroad!! So, whoever posted the first Grand Funk song, come take a bow as I didn't find it to quote you.
I'm pretty sure these three guys were the first American act who could sell out an arena all by themselves. (I think I remember that correctly.) Also, on a personal note, as GFR is not in the alleged Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it's one more reason to scorn that organization. Now, on with the show! Oh, I prefer Farner's voice to Brewer's voice, but we start with Brewer on a song I thought he did very well. There were a number of "power trios" out at this time, and not one of them was weak. All were top notch performers musicians and song writers. I put these guys at the top of that heap. None of them had the history of a Clapton, but they came to play!! Plus, 'Merica!!!!
