That reminds me of the kind of stuff you used to see on Austin City limits when it first started in 1975. Unfortunately, most of those shows were lost, destroyed, or taped over. It was mainly Texas acts then and heavy on the Austin scene. Willie, Jerry Jeff Walker, B. W. Stevenson, Michael Murphy, Steve Fromholtz, Rusty Weir, and a bunch of early Texas songwriters. In 1977 or so they started bringing in national acts and the flavor of the show changed. Those first two or three years were special.

I see your "singer/song writers" and raise 2
One Today, the other tomorrow.

Tom Waits is up first.
I don't remember how it came up in conversation decades ago, probably from an article someone was reading, but one of my ilk said, "Tom Waits, throws words like Dice." That fits. He's got a way with them.
To quote the cliche, he wrote about the seedy underbelly of life.
I mean, who doesn't or hasn't. But, it's all in how you tell the Story. He can tell stories. Tomorrow's Mystery Guest can do the same. The '70s popularized the last of the American poets. No more.

Small Change - 1976

Yup, is voice can be a turn off for many. It sounds like a parody of a street bum playing in a honky tonk. But, it's a practiced voice for him. He said in an interview a long time ago, it's how his Uncle talked. Sometimes, I'm not in the mood for the voice. But, I'm there for the stories......

Today, my fine feathered friends, is the second Rock Poet!

It's Warren Zevon!!! A number of you already knew that. It makes sense. Another guy that could come up with a premise and write a story around it. Zevon was a bit more political than Waits. Both to the left of most of us here, but still...great stories. Fun stories, not simply just funny in parts like Waits, but fun. There was usually a twist involved in the songs. But enough talk!!!!

Excitable Boy - 1978

One of the things that I admire about Warren Zevon was that he was not a song writing snob. If you were a good friend, he'd write a song with you without worrying about his precious reputation.

He wrote a song with a famous mystery writer. "Roland...", he wrote with a guy he met in Spain who was an actual mercenary. You got a good story, let's sing it. Interesting man. I can highly recommend the last album he recorded as he was dying.

Here's one I've been wanting to do for many months:
The Stooges.

Not "The Three Stooges," but not really off the mark either. It's the one with Iggy Pop.

We're going to listen to the two albums that led to the first two Stooges' break ups. They're pretty damn good. One sold well but was recorded really crappy, and the other was very well produced, but no one bought it.

Here toy go:

The Stooges

(I really screwed the pooch on the first post!! I edited four times. Yikes.)

So, I've been waiting to see if there would be a good audio quality mix for the next album. There's isn't. Originally, it was recorded by the Stooges in England literally in between break ups due to, oh you guys know........heroin and alcohol!!! Sure there are people who say alcohol and heroin broke them up, but those people are WRONG! They couldn't be more WRONG!

But, I digress. They recorded the songs and I think they mixed them down first then David Bowie mixed them in a day? I can't remember the story, but the 24 track tapes were remastered way later on like three times, and those all sound like crap. The Bowie mixed version is good, but the quality of the recordings are crap. Like I said, this album was done in between break ups.
Raw Power - 1973
Side 1
1  Search and Destroy
2  Gimme Danger
3  Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell
4  Penetration
Iggy & The Stooges - Search And Destroy (Bowie Mix) (Audio)
Iggy & The Stooges - Gimme Danger (Bowie Mix) (Audio)

There are still Stooges alive!!!!! Not many.

Iggy himself has had an amazing solo career. Since the first rehab attempt, he's been averaging an album (be it solo, or with others, or live albums) release once every two years. Not bad. And pretty good and even keel music. Always listenable and never repetitive.

I had trouble with it last night. If you put the YT share URL in the shortcut it gave an invalid code warning. If you posted the URL at the top of the page in the shortcut it would work.

Rabbit Hole Time!!!!!!!

(As a side note:
Couldn't find a copy of the original, but the purpose of these two albums when released in the mid '70s was to highlight a new audiophile technique of recording called "direct to vinyl." One my Dad's JBL 200s speakers, this album sounded impressive as all get out back in 1975 or 76. It was a long time ago.) ETA: just looked it up! Album was released in 1972. I must be thinking about 1974 in personal terms. I should have decided to remember everything in terms of when I finally grew a real mustache (8th grade, Bitches, and I'm not even Serbian!), I might be more accurate in my recollections.

Discounting previous on-stage antics that bordered on mental health issues, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, in their many forms, have not only been really good, they've been consistently good. That's remarkable in and of itself, even during years when very few were paying attention to him. There's a lot of really good solo stuff.

Some "artists" when they know it's over, put out anything to fulfill the contract: one more live album or another remaster of a remaster with 18 more demos on it, etc. Not our Boy, Iggy. He just goes for it every time he's up at the plate.

(Dicky Betts up above ^)

Today we visit with Eric Clapton and specifically the album 461 Ocean Boulevard. I remember when this one came out in 1974. Clapton returned to music after dealing with a heroin addiction. As kids, we had our Saturday morning (starts at 0830) meeting to pick apart one or two albums to learn from them. This one was pretty good. We all agreed on that.
This was also the time when Clapton was in live with George Harrison's wife. Patti or Patty something-er-other. George was cool about it being enlightened and all. I'm more inclined towards him thinking, "ha! someone else's problem." Who has not been there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, enough chit chat!!!!

I may have to go back and listen to that again one day. There was a time it seemed that LP was the only record the two local "underground" FM stations played. I broke buttons on radios trying to get away from listening to that ever again back then.

I was a child of the 70s.  Black light posters, stars on ceiling, koss headphones with viny records.  Pot smelled like weed not skunk.  Bought concert tickets at record store. First album was rolling stones goat heads soup.  Kiss alive was one of my favorites.  Saw them in 1977.  Great show.  Damn i miss the 70s.  Jackson browne and peter frampton remind me alot of the 70s.  Old aerosmith towards late 70s.  Toys in the attic and rocks.

I know exactly what you mean. FM was turning into AM. The "popular" songs would be played every damn hour. Stairway to Heaven, Hotel California and Freebird. Fuckin' eh!!! I was sick of all of them. 50 years later, I can listen to them again and not become enraged! LOL

I have been neglectful of duties here. There's more to the Story!!

Edward Mahoney came out West to the SF Bay Area in the '60s. He was a Hustler which was particular to all the New York and New Jersey transplants that I knew. Out here, being part of the Ol' West, we were "measured." Quite the dichotomy.
Mahoney found a patron in another transplant and fellow Hustler, Bill Graham. Eddie Money was a better song writer than singer, but his voice was pretty unique in that he carried his New York City accent in it. He also had Eleven (11) Top 40 Hits. This should be repeated. Eddie Money had Eleven (11) Top Forty Hits. Phenomenal! Superlative! Most people are ecstatic with getting into the Top 200 which is not easy, but 11 Top 40 Hits is one hell of a success story not matter what else befell him.
His debut album was his SF Bay Area Night Club act with almost entirely original songs. For most of us who were in bands, walking into a club and playing original songs is what we would call a "ballsy" move. Please to enjoy.

Next guy up came from Dalls, Texas, and headed to New York where he and another fellow named Jim Steinman played a sort of con-game with the labels and won! What comes next is what a Senior Executive from CBS (not just the label, but Corporate) said was the worst music he had ever heard. This album has sold 43 million units and is still selling today. In fact, our next featured artist has sold over 100 million units!!! Not bad for a kid that played Defensive Tackle in High School and was also in the Drama Club. (Hopefully, he wasn't one of those Drama Club weirdos.)
He got obese to avoid conscription. I can't say I blame him for avoiding that fight even with me saying the two generations of my family here all went in. But, since Linebacker II says that War could have been Won in 11 days or less if it had been done back in 1965, he had good enough reasons to say "fuck it." On the other hand, I would've missed 9 years of hearing from the Old Timers wonderful stories about Bang Cao Phuc or Mei Lik Uc over and over again!!! LOL But, besides that little tiny difference of opinion, I believe he would've fit in here at arfcom. Most of the people highlighted in this thread would not, and to be honest, I doubt we'd want them here.

Today, I thought we'd focus on the split between when culturally, not politically, the '60s become the '70s. It's going to take one band, and one secret movie, but a number of posts.

First the Band: Crabby Appleton.
Some of you may be righteously old enough to have watched Captain Kangaroo as a child i.e. me, or perhaps you watched it later on in Life while stoned out of your gourd i.e. many of you.

Crabby Appleton was the bad guy in the carton Tom Terrific, and he was also rotten to the core. He would you by happily repeating that.

Michael Fennelly was brought in as vocalist for a group that had to get through a name change. He's one of a handful of rock n rollers that can actually sing very well. (Most of us suck at it, but it's Rock, so who cares.)

Phil Jones is probably the most famous of this group, and a great drummer.

They only produced two albums. One critically acclaimed well selling album that got them on American Band Stand a couple of times and had a Top 40 Hit Single, and one that didn't do well at all, so they broke up. That was pretty common place back then. It's Business; nothing personal.

Let's start with the album no one liked!!!!
