We should keep this going through Q4 this year.

That said, Boreham's ContinuMod RS200 was supposed to arrive in 2024. To commemorate its 40th.

Subsequently they released the Road-Legal and Alan Mann (after acquiring rights and bringing in Alan's son)  track only restomods of the MK1 Ford Escort.

Then the word came RS200 was to  "arrive later". The website was updated with some additional information, snazzy peek shots with the new RS200 under veil and a Q3 2025 reveal date.

Came and went.

Now there's no date, and the full page has been reduced to the previous "Enquiry Form", and the product link has had a " - Coming Soon" addition since the refresh.

I'll speculate less here than with Zach. Boreham is a going concern, tho there's necessities involved to launch the RS200.

So this guy won't be the only one, and a good bit less reason to expect much. But tho  I'm firmly in your camp. I'm also rooting for him. He's been in schedule so far . If he delivers pretty much  anything in Q4 beyond the representative, I'll be not only pleasantly surprised - I'll be enthusiastically so.

This isn't their market.

Twenty some years ago, the Nissan mini-pickup flew off the lots because you could finance one for the magical $100/mo.

IF it and Slate make it longer term, there will be a big market.  It may not be a very profitable market, but it will be big.  The problem with large, thinly profitable markets is that one misstep can ruin them.

Reo has a better chance than Slate because the lowest end market doesn't have garages or the budget to rewire a charging port.  The 600 mile range is genius.

A Big 3 or Japanese company can't possibly do this as they are bogged down by pensions, huge marketing costs, high overhead, etc.

Oh, I completely agree.  Although I am extremely skeptical at this point, and firmly believe it will be impossible for him to have an actual car in mass production before 2030, I genuinely HOPE that he is able to make this work - even if it is delayed.  It would be a very cool addition to the options for consumers, and would help disrupt the automotive industry in a very positive way.

Apparently I'm still on the mailing list, because I got an email letting me know that they have graciously decided to let people put up to 5 vehicles on a single reservation, for $25 each of course. That should goose the numbers a little.

I guess the scam is to make interest off the deposits as long as possible before refunds start getting called en masse
And maybe hope some people die/forget in the next year or so, with some overpriced merch along the way?

If he gets 10,000 deposits, that would be about $8k a year in 4 week T bills. Doesn't seem worth the hassle to me but I guess it's pretty much free except for some web hosting, and BS posting

Well, if the REO and Slate aren't  enough, some new startup is trying to crowd fund the Telo Truck now.
$152 gets your place in line for an EV truck that doesn't exist.

Looks like like the front fell off if you ask me. And base model will start at $41,000 .

https://www.telotrucks.com/

INTRODUCTION

TELO Trucks makes the world's most efficient EV pickup for urban living and weekend adventuring
We redesigned the EV truck footprint and function from the ground up by marrying the state of the art in electrification and advanced safety technology.

With Toyota Tacoma capability, Tesla-like range and efficiency, in the footprint of a MINI Cooper, the TELO MT1 is the most compact, practical and technically advanced truck.

Meeting the need for a highly functional and powerful EV pickup equally suited to navigating downtown and hauling people and gear out of town.

Looks like they've solved the manufacturing issue by crowd sourcing it:

Dear Reservation Holders,

You put money down on the truck. A lot of you also make parts, run shops, machine metal, write software, or build things for a living. Today we opened two doors for exactly that: the founding supplier list for REO Direct, our open parts marketplace, and the REO careers desk. Both take about three minutes and cost nothing.

I understand their timeline.  I'm saying the release of official renderings is too late on that timeline.  evidenced by the decline in reservations.  Hell, I would place a reservation today if I could confirm they wouldn't look retarded.

All the "objectives" they have meet to this point have been relatively easy.  I think it would be really cool if they can pull it off, but I dont think the numbers work.  That reality will come out in time.  As much as it pains me to acknowledge it, $22k is nothing in 2026.

Take Japan's Kei trucks as an example.  The cost around $4-7.5k to make and they are about as stripped down as possible and barely highway capable.  There are almost no safety features and certainly no emissions standards. The engines are arguable much cheaper and simpler than what Reo is talking about using.

$22k is a literal pipe dream. About the only way it could be remotely feasible is if every piece is produces overseas and strictly assembled here.

I have gotten 2 or 3 emails from REO.

They've all been some sort of attempt to get more reservations or a deeper stake in the company.

Seems like dude is trying to network his way into a car company...

I'm more doubtful this will turn up anything but I'm still hoping this will work.

I'm stunned he's as far as he is.  Without knowing much about interior abilities, internal plans, hell what concrete goals exist, it's hard to say.

I've learned there's a number of paths to the end game. In this case he may get a boost from media coverage at an interval that's advantageous. But I don't know what  assumptions are, nor what an expected response should be. He's ahead of Slate and Ineos with hard pricing, tho that may bite him in the ass.

He seems to be following Rivian's playbook. He's exceeded what I recall Ineos collecting by this time with the Grenadier - tho that was $100 and I was one who surrendered when the franchise distribution was released.  Slate had over 100k @ $50 IIRC. Conversion to  orders (3 hundo?j was like 10k.  So it's not clear to me where he should be, outside this level seems impressive given the pitch so far is long on promises and short on, well everything else. It is crafted directly at a subset of people, who wish to believe tho.

Guys on his way to $500k from total strangers, with less than a handshake. I'm not going to criticize his strategy much since it's uncharted and unknown. But we do know when. If he delivers in Q4, he'll be better than Boreham as I noted, that will spur confidence and no doubt more deposits. But I've no real yardstick to wield here. I'm curious to hear if anyone does.

Current and recent Kei trucks have cats and emissions requirements in Japan at Shaken. Perhaps less than non-commericials. I'm betting CO, NoX, PM and HC from mfgs. Tailpipe at Shaken for CO and HC like others. Black plates go yearly.

That timeline doesn't make sense.
If they can build production models in 2027 for testing then why wait until 2029 to deliver?

Actual car companies already have prototype hardware being tested in running cars for 2028 and 2029 models, but this scam company doesn't even have a rendering of their design?

They're counting on people not caring about their lost $25 when they finally admit that they couldn't make their (never designed or built) car financially viable.
It's probably a couple guys who made a website to see if they could make a living off scamming people with an impossible plan.

Slate was founded in '22. Debuted in '25, opened for reservations later that year? Deliveries commence in very late '26. Ineos took longer. Both those were companies committing to high expectation, highly developed models. China does many model in 18-24 months but electric and SDV. This is the antithesis of that.

But those all had safety, mass market appeal and regulatory/validation to high orders involved.

Look more at what Joel Jackson did with M bius in Kenya. I posted the M bius II prior. His first proto went from thought to road in less than a year. Once proved out, he spent about 3 years engineering, prototyping and sourcing. I this guy is buying off the shelf and putting together like a Mechano set, without concern for FMVSS and less for owner experience, he could outpace Joel. Who was hampered by local availability and some other issues. This is what he flew up the pole.

It improved, tho it was never good.

Also explore the original Toyota Kijang that was least cost project for Toyota in the ASEAN markets -  late 70s. Akio Toyoda's  first gig as platform chief was the IMV program. That to an extent underpinned its replacements.

This  is what you get for short money in the world of automotive mfg. For what he's doing don't expect a 80s Toyota Hilux or 90s Ranger.

How it navigates the regulatory landscape in the States to get market I've already speculated. LSV or something relying on kit assembly/registration. Superformance worked that angle for a bit. Buy the kit, pay a third party "not associated" to install the engine then register in your state as a "home built". Sketchy? Sure. So is Left Hand Utes.

All have perils,  But there's no significant liability event that has reared its ugly head for any of them yet. There's always dark grey corners where you can exist. It just can't go very far, this guy has the spotlight in him. But we'll need to see where this guy is aiming before we can pick it apart

Tesla took in 2 million Cyber Truck pre orders then delivered 46,000 units in 14 months and had exhausted the Pre-Order pool.

That is for an existing car company. Pre orders as a gauge of demand for a company that hasn't built a prototype?

The Tesla Cybertruck launch was poorly timed AND a disaster.

Tesla debuted the model in November of 2019. They said production would start in 2021, and pricing would start at $40k. Production didn't start until late 2023, pricing at launch started at $70k, and parts were falling off the trucks.

There also might have been some happenings in between the launch event and the production start that might have influenced the market a wee bit. lol

They might be,. But  I want to emphasize, you very much could be right as well. Timing, unfortunately, is mostly an aspect that can be judged in hindsight. Often in post mortem. Which ain't optimal, but is also increasingly less the case as measures become more sophisticated and more immediate. But marketing is more a dark art than science. It also relies on reflection of options not taken. Plus how he's proceeding may be absolutely necessary. Which may cause me (and you) pause. But the dude is succeeding by the external benchmark, the entity is proceeding.

But as with much in business it's also less important to be perfect than it is to be bulldogged certain and resilient. Ray Kroc channeling Calvin Coolidge and the Indian from Josie Wales ("endeavor to persevere") sure as shit aren't wrong. Would I give him $25.  Not really but I'm also not really interested in the product. Likely because I've seen the sausage made. Plus I don't think he escapes the gravity well of regulation. Unless he has some juice I doubt, or novel path none has ever considered.  Not sure a former Real Estate broker from Dallas has the levers to pull it off either.  But I am pulling for him, as long as he delivers good product and doesn't kill people.

To be exceptionally fair, I'll point out Toyota thought the same of Tesla (and dumped their early investment) AND others Space X. Chesky et al at AirBnb barely got into Y combinator. 'Ubercab' sure didn't seem poised to beat regulators. Every garage corp ever - Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Disney - who would have called "all in" at month 6? We all  would looking back.

But I've got fuck all to assess this outfits prospects. And I've got some very small, but painful, experience doing just that. So yea, I'm content to watch and root for this guy. We'll see.

That is for an existing car company. Pre orders as a gauge of demand for a company that hasn't built a prototype?

I was intentionally avoiding Tesla. They are an outlier in so many ways. An amphibian in a fish world (maybe a bird even). Elon is something .

Cybertruck was tech bros phenomenon as much as anything. But that point, Elon had celebrity, a global stage and credible success by the time that popped.  Even  in peeps far divorced from the those circles and interests.

But from what I recall of Model 3, that thing went over 250k. More reservations? I'm also thinking it was like a grand. But I can't see 500k reservations at a thousand a pop. But I didn't pay attention to Tesla because they weren't a car company. By the time it hit me it didn't matter, it didn't matter .

Thats incredibly impressive if those number are true. But again not very attached to the situation here. Teed that as both my familiarity and Tesla at the time to REO now. If Elon was on his way to selling 20k preorders for a promised Roadster, maybe. This thing kind defies logic and assessment. But most good stuff does.

Aren't they targeting the midsize (ranger, tacoma) instead of small (maverick, santa cruz).

Not sure. Maybe so. But at $29,000, not really all that cheap.
