While these haven't set the world on fire like their predecessors these have gotten around.

Venezuela, Libya, Syria for sure.

Seeing them on TV during the Libyan Civil War in 2011 caused me to eventually buy an Arsenal SGL-21 which was the closest you could get in the US to one.

The 74 style muzzle brake does some work on these. The recoil reduction is noticeable with the brake.

I really wish we could still get something like this here. Arsenal brought in the Bulgarian SLR after the Russian arms ban signed by Obama in 2013 but currently isn't bringing in any in a figuration like this.

I saw new production AK103s carried by soldiers in Egypt on several occasions, and brand spanking new Scorpion Evos with the police

The AK100 series rifles aren't like the AK74M, they ARE the 74M - in different calibers. It would be beyond cool to get an AK104 in 6.5g, or even an AKSU. Damn, that would be tits

Functionally nothing. Same caliber, same accuracy

Mechanically the SLR series are AKM pattern rifles but chambered in various calibers. The Russian AKM and the AK74 are actually different evolutions of the AK, and branched away from each other. They all function similarly, but the construction methods are different

The SLR series rifles are built on original Russian tooling from the early 80s. The Russians modernized their own tooling but the Bulgarians never bothered

I just sold a Saiga 7.62 with the 100 series front installed from Izhmash. I converted to buttstock and pistolgrip.
It was close enough to an AK103 for my plinking purposes. Ymmv.

My first AK was an SGL-31 and then later got the SGL-21 to complete the set. The brake most definitely tames the felt recoil without having an excessive, annoying side blast that most other brakes do. I like mine so much I even got the pricey AK-103 mags to go along with it and use them all the time. Both also sport the same Holosun 503GU red dot and RS Regulate mounts. Never any issues with either rifle and setup.

There are a few different models of the Saiga 7.62x39 itself - some are very close to the AK-103 and clearly came off of the same production lines, to the point that some have been observed coming in with scrubbed Russian military acceptance proofs on the receiver, and some even came in with drilled third pin holes that were riveted shut from the factory and somehow got imported successfully before being recalled by the ATF.

There are some others that came in with slab side receivers lacking dimples, or heavier/longer profile barrels, or pinned barrel components - things that are typically not seen on 74M series variants and yet made it onto the Saiga sporters.

It's splitting hairs at some point, but really the closest thing to the 103 to come into the US have been the folding stock SGL-21 models which are pretty rare at this point.

All of the Saigas are based more or less on 74M series design elements otherwise - certain features are unique to the 74M series, like the replaceable camming pin, press-dimpled (vs pinned) barrel components, etc. You could spend all day going over which parts are "correct" and which are not.

I have an SLR107FR, it has the triangle side folder, with a plum grip and handguards.

I’ve actually considered modernizing it a bit, but haven’t gotten around to it. I really wish there were plum bakelite mags in 7.62.

The Saigas and SGLs are built differently than the real military versions. The most modern AK-100 platforms have no block pins, they are dimpled onto the barrel. Pretty sure the feed block is different as well. But they are very close.

What's more fun about a 5.45 AK?

Gotta be honest, my UF 7.62 with just a slant brake will hurt your damn cheek and shoulder after a few mags it seems.

Maybe it's the recoil thing you guys are talking about.  Never shot a 5.45 AK

For some dumb reason it seems like the Yugo's only chrome lined their 5.56 rifles and not their 7.62x39 rifles that used their corrosive ammo.

That is really the only reason I never liked the Yugo rifles.

Many of the Saiga sporters have the above features.

Some have the machining step for a feed ramp applied to the trunnion, some don't. Those are referred to as square/round trunnions respectively.

While I haven't shot a full size 5.45 AK, my 5.45 krink shoots rather smoothly compared to my M92. So I'd imagine a full size 5.45 is really smooth shooting.

Yes IMO Zastava AKs have more of an old world European level of build quality and remind me of early 20th century German manufactured arms - e.g. many of the individual parts are still labeled during assembly by hand electropencil, have deep bluing, etc.

Damn I want one of those.

I wish Arsenal would make some and ship them here. Any of the SLRs in 762 or 545 would be great, or 74s. I'd take either.

If not, hopefully PSA will get the message and start pumping out some 74 clones or SLR clones.

I remember buying a non-used complete poly folder set in 2010, then buying an SGL-31 specifically to send to have it installed.

Then the SGL with the side folder was introduced by Arsenal several months later.

No regrets though!

My AK105 is the smoothest shooting gun I own, except for the CZ455 in 22lr. It's easily smoother than any AR I own - maybe the PredatAR is tied
