"The secret was simple. They could not get along without the machinery. If it did not run, the ship would be a cold, dark hulk in the water. And it did not work with engines to order them to run and to send down the marines to shoot them if they did not run. No Admiral could court-martial an engine. All the machinery cared about a man was what he knew and what he could do with his two hands, and nobody could fool it on those things. Machinery always obeyed its own rules and if you broke the rules it didn't matter how important or charming or pure in heart you were, you couldn't get away with it. Machinery was fair and honest and it could force people to be fair and honest."

Very similar to my dads time in the navy. Korea as a helicopter mechanic. He did a lot of things wrong but he was needed to keep it running.

For those who don't know, the actor who played Po Han also was the wizard in Conan the Barbarian

I hadn't seen it in many years but  watched it again on HBO today.

A truly fine film and probably Steve McQueen's best.   Anyone else seen it?

Classic film with plenty of BAR action.  Rambo's CO as ship's skipper is good too. Filmed in Taiwan.

Didn't he also play one of the Jap admirals in Pearl Harbor?

The guy who plays the brothel owner is pretty well-known, too, and then you have Attenborough, who played Hammond on Jurassic Park.

The gunboat was filmed in the hong kong territories.  The boat was a converted Hong Kong harbor ferry.  I remember a website by a guy who was in the navy back in the 60s and saw the set boat and got to meet steve mcqueen and whatshername.   He said both were very nice and gave him a tour of the set/boat.  The site had photos of the boat, and only one side was dressed out fully as a gun boat.

Great Movie

Watched it with my dad many times in the 60's

I have dad's first edition of the book

dad was to me the 50's version of McQueens character as a tin can sailor
out of San Diego who earned the South Seas China Service Medal
for ops against the nascent Chicom regime in support of the Republican
Chinese government

Saw the movie, read the book, and became an aircraft mechanic because of it's influence.

McKenna also wrote a book of short stories called The Left-Handed Monkey Wrench. If I remember right he was a machinists mate in the Navy, and wrote about what he knew.

I'll have to find that book, thanks for the info!

Great movie, saw it on TV a few times when I was a kid.   My Dad (an old Navy man) loved it.

I really like the movie.  It was the first one that I can remember the good guy died.  This was junior or high school time for me.

I later joined the Navy, became a MM, and stood engineroom watches.  I even had dragons sewn on the insides of my dress blue's cuffs.

One of my favorite parts is when they have to sling their rifles before being escorted back to the ship.

McQueen grabs his M1907 sling and gives it a yank extending it from its short parade postion to its carry position.

Most people know the M1907 as a target sling but it can be setup in this manner for a field rifle. And how I have mine set up on my Garand.

You know "The Sand Peebles" is a excellent movie when no one in this thread says a single bad thing about it, including me.

Steve McQueen, died before his time...

The guy that owned the bar/brothel where the crew hung out played David Lo Pan from 'Big Trouble In Little China'.

Great movie.

I don't watch it often.  Always afraid I'm going to start BAR shopping and make a poor financial decision.
