A singular moment rivaling the lunar landing will be hard. Its also hard to foresee technological breakthroughs that could happen (like fission).

I think you're underselling going to Mars. Going to the moon is a short stroll by comparison...and unlike the moon, permanent colonization could be a very viable thing. If the theory is that man can't do things like this with extreme motivation, imagine a scenario where Earth was about to be made no longer viable to live on. That might open up the purse strings and motivate a few scientists.
Curing cancer...like a real no shit cure, not just an improved treatment that drops the mortality rate a bit. Viable fusion power plants. Time travel. Diet pills that allow you to eat carbs all day but be ultra healthy and ripped. |
