If you're referring to a Mauser 1930 Broomhandle, they used stripper clips, not detachable magazines.

I'd pick a S&W Model 1905, 4th Change in .38 Special in a shoulder holster.

Skip the dance start making Sten tubes with the lady as fast as you can since you only have 42 years so get busy.  If she isn't that ride or die, dump her for a better gal.

Dillinger also famously said that there were two things you could never trust completely….women and semi-automatic pistols.

Probably a Colt Police Positive. Very compact and 6 shots. Could be in 38 Special or 38 S&W, maybe 32-20. It depended on how hard it was to find 38 Special ammo in 1944

I'm good on a pair of pearl handled inlaid 1911s in a well worked leather shoulder holster.

Pretty much your only option of you have modern expectations in the 1940’s.

This is the only correct answer. Carried in a custom shoulder rig.  Same as what I carry now, only in a Sparks Summer Special.

In 1944, the number of Hi Powers in the US could likely be counted on one hand.

Bringbacks likely weren't brought back until after VE Day.
Browning Arms did not start importing them until 1954.

Maybe he took it off a Waffen SS panzergrenadier himself, and he was sent home on leave for kicking so much butt?

The War Department did actually hand-pick people like that and send them to the Homefront to support war bond sales (usually after awarding them medals).

So yeah FPNI.
Ultimate winning. lol

Again, not in the US.
None of those Canadian Inglis Hi Powers would find their way into civilian hands until well after the war ended.

I dont think that concealed carry was a widespread thing in 1944
Keep in mind that when FL passed its concealed carry laws in the 80s it was a massive shift from what had been allowed
Ironically most Upstate NY counties in the 40s were still decades away from restricting issued carry permits with administrative overstamps.
I wouldnt have been a routine suit and tie guy in the 40s any more than I am now

A S&W .44 Special, which was somewhat the pistolero's choice of the era.

Handloaded of course.
