I honestly don't think we would have gotten to this point with the income tax were Senators still accountable to the states, and correspondingly the state legislatures still a direct link to federal legislation.  The 16th amendment would have been either repealed or restricted under the additional scrutiny - That loss of state checks and balances on the federal process is the biggest travesty of the 17th amendment.
